What does it take to turn on the Friday Night Lights?
High school football games are a staple of Texas culture, but the games themselves are only part of a bigger spectacle that takes place for at least 11 weeks every Fall in school districts across the state. The bands, the cheer squads, precision drill teams and everything else that goes into playing "the game" is a well-choreographed dance between school district athletic departments, food services, transportation and security that eventually brings everything together in one place.

Espada out as Astros manager
The Houston Astros made it official Wednesday -- the club will not renew the contract of manager Joe Espada. Espada's contract will expire at the end of the month and most believed that the manager needed a deep playoff run to receive a new contract offer from club owner Jim Crane after barely winning the AL West title with an 81-81 record. The Astros were eliminated in the Wild Card Series by the Chicago White Sox in a two-game sweep on Sept. 30.

Playoff dreams at stake for Pats, Coogs, Rangers
We’ve passed the midway point of the high school football season and most of the area schools are still in the postseason chase. One could make the case that all the teams are still in it, but the strength of schedule for remaining games as well as the number of games left to play will make it almost impossible for some schools to nab a playoff spot.
