Building A New NATO
A NEW TRANSATLANTIC BARGAIN THREE YEARS AFTER the fall of the Berlin Wall, Europe is headed toward crisis. Memories of democracy's triumph have faded. The immense problems facing the new democracies in the East are increasingly compounded by political gridlock, economic recession and resurgent nationalism. The revolutions of 1989 not only toppled communism; they unleashed a set of dynamics that have unraveled the peace orders of Yalta and Versailles.
Nothing to Fear
In "Saving NATO From Europe," (November/December 2004), Jeffrey L. Cimbalo warns that a dagger is pointed at the heart of the Atlantic alliance, and the murder weapon is the European Union's draft constitution.
Rebuilding the Atlantic Alliance
A GREAT DIVIDE One of the most striking consequences of the Bush administration's foreign policy tenure has been the collapse of the Atlantic alliance. Long considered America's most important alliance and a benchmark by which a president's foreign policy skill is measured, the U.S.-European relationship has been shaken to its foundations over a series of disputes that culminated in the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
A United Germany
By Ronald D. Asmus March 1, 1990 (Wolfgang Rattay/Courtesy Reuters) A revolution is taking place in Germany. It is a revolution that will have profound ramifications not only for the two German states, but for Europe as a whole. To be sure, the dramatic events of 1989 in the German Democratic Republic are part of the political avalanche that has swept across Eastern Europe, toppling communist regimes from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
193 Incredible Travel Books – Counting Countries Part I - GlobalGaz
193 Incredible Travel Books Counting Countries. The UN states that there are 193 countries in the world. I am on a quest to travel to every country in the world. You can see where I have been so far. An important part of travel for me is reading. I try to read one book (sometimes two or even three if I am lucky) pertaining to each country (and also some non-official countries as well) I visit. Reading a book can provide so much more context for your travels.
A Little War That Shook the World: Georgia, Russia, and the Future of the West
As the title suggests, Asmus sees enormous stakes in the August 2008 Russian-Georgian war. Whether they were as high as he thinks or for the reasons he ascribes can be disputed, but there is much merit in his argument that the war laid bare the fundamental weaknesses in Europe’s security arrangements. Many would also agree that the tragedy revealed U.S. and European leaders’ myopic and reckless inattention to the gathering clouds of war.
