Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

professional wrestling recap writer.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A fearless approach to giving your audience authentic answers to their questions. Being trustworthy, fair, and honest at all times.

Who do you wish followed you?

Jay-Z and Harry Kane.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, managing editor.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Red Bull breakdancing world finals, covering Sunny Choi. Opened my eyes to its massive cultural impact.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Brand yourself, but don't make yourself the center of any story. Stay out of the way and take all stories seriously no matter their importance.

When's the best time to pitch you?

At any time. I respect the process of storytelling at the highest level. There's no regimented process to a good story.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A story to cover a cow bingo fundraiser in Oklahoma that ended a feud between two rival churches.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That MMA is barbaric or an underground sport.
