See Art Museum’s New Exhibit, ‘Portrait of the Collector’
The Milwaukee Art Museum‘s newest featured exhibition includes themes of struggle, sacrifice, hunger and loss, but also of faith, family and generosity. The collection, which highlights Dutch and Flemish paintings from the Baroque period, is as much a reflection of 17th-century Dutch society as it is of the lives of its collectors, Isabel and Alfred Bader.
Visual Art: 100 Years Of Memorable Photography
One of the first works you encounter upon entering the exhibit “Pause/Connect” at the Warehouse Art Museum is a large black-and-white image of two dogs snuggling each other by photographer William Wegman. Wegman’s photos of his beloved Weimaraners are iconic and have been seen everywhere, from international exhibits to the “Sesame Street” show. They can be very funny, but this one, “Friends,” from 2009, is gentle and rather poignant.

William Kentridge is one of the greatest living artists. His work combines a deeply held world view revolving around social justice combined with a neo-expressionist drawing practice, ranging expansively to include animation, film, opera and assemblage. The artist achieves a singular artistic gestalt, a vital visual language exposing inequity while simultaneously preserving joy and an infectious sense of play. Kentridge, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, is the son of anti-apartheid lawyers.

A World Created With A Pencil
The pencil is such a basic way of making marks on paper that it’s easy to overlook as a serious medium for art making. The beautiful range of values, from faintest gray to deep, shiny black, and the great variety of textures, lines, moods and feelings the simple graphite stick can create is often underestimated. Which is what makes “Drawn Out,” a show devoted to this humblest of tools, and now on display at The Portrait Society, so notable. Galleries rarely show exhibits of drawings.
