1. Introduction General information is lacking on the occurrence, risk factors, economic impact, and control measures for mastitis in sheep in California. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, California was the second largest sheep producing state in the United States, with an estimated 533,000 head of sheep in 2022 [1]. About half of these sheep (270,000 head) were breeding ewes one year of age or older [1].
PLOS ONE, Aug 2023 Adoption of electronic identification ear tags (EID) and DNA testing by commercial range sheep producers in the Western United States has been low, despite the availability of these technologies for over a decade. Jointly, these technologies offer an approach to provide individual animal performance data to improve flock health, genetic and reproductive management.

Antibiotic use in livestock/poultry and veterinary services Around 40% of respondents purchased antibiotics for their livestock/poultry in the past year prior to the survey [Table 2]. More than half of small-scale farmers (Cluster 3) purchased antibiotics, which was greater than the proportion of backyard farmers (Clusters 1 and 2). The survey respondents mainly purchased antibiotics for their livestock/poultry from veterinarians (63.5%).
