New course load requirements for professors raise concerns among faculty
Miami University released new course load requirements to its professors on Dec. 3, 2024. The requirements are calculated based on the workload equivalent (WLE) system used previously. However, the revised requirements, which would go into effect fall of 2025, would increase the number of courses for most professors. Quality vs.
The purpose of liberal education in a tumultuous world
When I was 18, I sat in a crowded lecture hall at Ohio University, crammed on both sides by people I didn’t know, freaked out about how I was going to keep my head above water. I felt myself begin to panic as I stewed in the warmth of other people when a large man wearing a sweat-stained shirt walked into the room, banged a book onto the lectern and just began lecturing. No niceties. No roll. Just a large, open book, and then the chalk started flying.
Some professors are concerned, and some friends don’t care: what is Ohio Senate Bill 83?
There’s no other way to say it: Senate Bill 83, the “Ohio Higher Education Enhancement Act,” will upend your educational experience. S.B. 83 risks burdening you with new coursework, hurting accredited degree programs (harming some of your chances at graduate or professional education), damaging your professionalization and limiting what you will learn and discuss in your classrooms. It’s a step back for higher education, both in Ohio and in the United States.

Ohio bill threatens freedom of education
By Rosemary Pennington February 25, 2022 I grew up in a small town in Appalachian Ohio. I loved where I grew up, the people and the culture, but I went away to college excited to learn and live somewhere new. Almost every day at university my eyes were opened to experiences I knew nothing about.
When we give into fear, terrorists win
By Rosemary Pennington One of the clearest memories I have of Sept. 11 is walking back into the lobby of the radio and TV station at Ohio University and seeing it filled with students, their attention glued to the row of TVs embedded in the front wall. Each small screen showed some version of the same image – what would come to be called ground zero in New York, shrouded in smoke and dust. I’d spent the morning reporting on the Athens County response to the attacks.
