Welcome to Firstlinks Edition 506 with weekend update
The Weekend Edition includes a market update plus Morningstar adds links to two additional articles. Every country develops differently. Each takes a unique path guided by its leaders, its institutions, its people, its rules and regulations, its taxes and incentives and ... that awkward word bandied around which is difficult to define ... its culture.
The impact of superannuation on retirement outcomes
(This article is an extract from a longer report linked at the end). Superannuation is substantially improving retirement incomes for nearly two million retired Australians by providing regular income streams. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data also indicate that in 2019-20 around 580,000 households, encompassing over 1 million Australians, were mainly dependent on payments from superannuation. This is nearly double the number of households mainly dependent on superannuation in 2009-10.
Welcome to Firstlinks Edition 505 with weekend update
The Weekend Edition includes a market update plus Morningstar adds links to two additional articles. Treasurer Jim Chalmers released the Review into the Reserve Bank on Thursday, and while many people are wearied by the media's preoccupation with monthly cash announcements and every word uttered by Governor Philip Lowe, the report is a revealing study of the functioning of our central bank.
ASIC's yin and yang design rules need a rebalance
There is no doubt the intentions of Australia’s financial regulator are honourable in the Design and Distribution Obligations (DDO) imposed on product providers. Putting aside the reality that 99% of investors never read these documents and a further level of red tape has been created, DDO is a good step in protecting unsophisticated investors. But the balance is wrong.
Meg on SMSFs: Total Super Balance quirks unpacked
In a monthly column to assist trustees, specialist Meg Heffron explores major issues on managing your SMSF. Total Superannuation Balance (or TSB) is a term many would assume to be fairly self-explanatory. It sounds like 'everything I have in super' and that’s more or less an accurate description. For some time now, it has been an important number when it comes to super contributions.

Don Stammer, leading Australian economist: "Congratulations to all associated. It deserves the good following it has." Eleanor Dartnall, AFA Adviser of the Year, 2014: "Our clients love your newsletter. Your articles are avidly read by advisers and they learn a great deal." Reader: "Great resource.
Private debt returns rise with inflation and less risk than equities
Rising inflation and official interest rates have helped to bring private debt into the mainstream of investment classes as investors seek to avoid the turbulence of public markets. The risk of a global slowdown is now also testing investment strategies. Many investors are again looking beyond equities and fixed income to weather the economic uncertainty in a way that reduces capital volatility and maintains a reliable income.
Five reasons fund managers don't talk about skill
In my career, I have spent hundreds of hours with fund managers attempting to assess their investment approach. When I look back at this, aside from questioning my life choices, the one thing that strikes me is how little fund managers discuss skill. Of course, they talk about past performance (if it is good), but the randomness and chance in financial markets render this a terrible proxy. This is a puzzling situation.
A working-class artist is something to be
Abstract The creative and cultural sectors in the United Kingdom largely exclude the working classes. Even the small number of working-class people who do ‘make it’ into these sectors often find themselves and their work badly treated by those who hold the real power. This article explores some of the experiences of working-class artists navigating the cultural sector and how exclusion, prejudice and precarity impacted and continue to impact them.
Tuvok Was A Champion of Men's Mental Health
CONTENT WARNING: This article contains mention of sexual assault and self-harm. In the “Hunters” episode of Star Trek: Voyager, the crew is overjoyed to receive an e-bundle of correspondence from their loved ones back on Earth. Tuvok, too, receives a letter from his wife and children. Neelix, beside himself with joyful empathy, delivers the message. Tuvok acknowledges receipt – and continues his work. “You’re going to wait until you’ve finished the tactical review,” asks Neelix, dumbfounded.
Superannuation and high account balances
Description There has been considerable public debate about both the quantum and equity of tax concessions for superannuation. This has been in the context of recent government budgets facing fiscal challenges and the Intergenerational Report which highlighted Australia’s ageing demographics and the likely impact on tax revenue.
