UK on track to add 1.7 GWp-dc of solar PV in 2023 (via Passle)
Very positive news today that the UK is on track for a 7 year high in annual solar deployment. As the pipeline for utility projects continues to grow, predictions of a 3GW market in 2024 look solid. It's not since the FiT and ROC subsidy days that the solar sector looked so buoyant in the UK. Those were certainly crazy times chasing installation deadlines for everyone in the sector (I lost a lot of hair as proof!).
Highest EV charging prices drop below petrol car running costs (via Passle)
The cost of ultra-rapid charging (+101kW) is falling in the UK. This is particularly important for many high mileage users without access to their own charger. These prices are now below the costs of running a petrol car which is an important milestone is convincing the public to make the switch. In order for mass adoption, we need access to a broad range of changing speeds according to the dwell time of drivers.
European warehouses now storing more than 80 GW of unsold solar panels (via Passle)
Oversupply of solar modules is becoming an increasingly big issue in Europe. Prices of cells and modules continue to fall at a staggering rate in 2023 with cell prices at around half the price they were in February this year. This can cause significant issues for many manufactures and distributors who are seeing the value of stored panels decrease substantially during their time in storage.
2023’s biggest tech deals are all climate infrastructure (via Passle)
As we face the enormous challenge of achieving net zero, it's reassuring to know that the investment required to make the transition is flooding in across Europe. 69% of the capital in the largest 20 tech deals have been in to climate tech companies, a shift from the fintech dominance in 2022.
97% of Auto Mechanics Can’t Work on Electric Cars, New Report Concludes (via Passle)

This short article addresses a number of issues, the key ones relate to The future of work EV/Automotive business models and supply chain Both huge topics. I think the first is the greater. It's well known that EV's require substantially less maintenance, and that poses a huge threat to Car dealerships and Autoshops, as the quote below shows.
Energy storage for renewables integration to reach $23B by 2026
A Happy New Year to everyone. I start the year with the latest from Navigant. Nothing radical here, pretty much what most of us in the sector know. The future of energy storage is big and bright, but not without its challenges still, and much work to be done on standardisation of both solutions and business models. No mention here of the interlink with the rapid advance of Electric transport, and the subsequent price and performance changes of Lithium batteries in particular, or any mention of V2G.
New diesel and petrol vehicles to be banned from 2040 in UK (via @Passle)
This is certainly welcome news in the transition to zero emission transport and the uptake of EVs. However I really believe that this can be achieved in a much quicker timescale. The last few years have seen monumental leaps in the development of EVs and the infrastructure to power them. A number of the major car manufacturers such as Volvo really seem to 'get it' and others are catching up fast.
Peer-to-peer trading, renewables and blockchain: What’s inside Ofgem’s ‘Regulatory Sandbox’ (via @Passle)
An EDF-led consortium is aiming to trial a local, peer-to-peer (P2P) power trading platform enabled by blockchain as one of a number of projects Ofgem is currently discussing in the context of its Regulatory Sandbox project. Earlier this year Ofgem’s Innovation Link announced that it was to open an energy ‘regulatory sandbox’ – a space in which energy companies could trial new innovations without incurring or being subject to all usual regulatory requirements.
