Bridging the divide? Why the integration of standardisation and individualisation of care remains paramount during turbulent times
Standardisation and its limits Standardisation has its origins in the Industrial Revolution and is intimately associated with Taylorism and ‘command-and-control’ approaches to management. By contrast, modern healthcare is a diverse and multiprofessional industry consisting of interconnections that meet the expectations of various stakeholders (eg, patients and carers, regulators, commissioners, communities and policymakers).

Horse racing tips for Monday: Ross Millar's best bets
LatestMost ReadFeaturedColumnistsAll It really feels like the Jumps season is in full swing now with top class action this weekend at Cheltenham, as well as high-class novices returning in Ireland.
Ross Millar's top tips: best bets for Monday's action
Our Monday tipster Ross Millar almost hit the target with Plumpton runner-up I See You Well last week, advised at at 50/1, and marks your card for the start of a new week. Gerri Colombe shortened in the betting for the Cheltenham Gold Cup after a a gritty winning performance in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal on Saturday. I’m aware I’m in the minority but I wasn’t all that impressed.
Ross Millar top tips: best bets for Monday's Jump action
Heavy rainfall, early inspections - the jumps are certainly back! Despite unhelpful weather, we were treated to a feast of competitive racing over the weekend. Despite a steady start to the season, Gary Moore had Botox Has primed and ready to land the West Yorkshire Hurdle under Caolin Quinn, suitably demonstrating the ups and downs in the life of a jump jockey, as he had hit the deck on his previous two rides. As a graded race, Quinn, who is still a conditional, was unable to utilise his claim.
Kameko Futurity Stakes: runner-by-runner guide and verdict
Will Saturday’s Kameko Futurity Stakes at Doncaster unearth another star a year on from an impressive win by subsequent Derby winner Auguste Rodin? Here’s a guide to all the runners in the final Group One race of the domestic season. 1 ANCIENT WISDOM Trainer: Charlie Appleby. Odds: 13-8. He made an impressive start to his season with back-to-back wins in a pair of 7f novice events at Haydock and Newmarket, winning with plenty to spare each time.
Aidan O'Brien: his top ten two-year-olds of this season Original
Our two-year-old racing expert Ross Millar delves deeper into the incredible juvenile firepower housed at Ballydoyle this season and names his top 10 as well as nominating a host of likely long-term targets. I try, where possible, to insure that this column does not focus solely on the large yards every week.
Juvenile Watch: Ross Millar's tips for Newmarket on Friday
Juvenile expert Ross Millar has some strong fancies at the Dubai Future Champions Festival at Newmarket on Friday and Saturday, live on Racing TV. FRIDAY Selection: Midnight Affair. Inquisitively lines up here as the highest-rated contender, but the forecast overnight rain might just produce underfoot conditions that will compromise his chances (he was non-runner in The Flying Childers on account of soft ground).
Juvenile Watch: Ross Millar's verdict on six pivotal races
There were a string of top two-year-old races at Newmarket and Longchamp over the weekend. Ross Millar assesses the victors and vanquished in his weekly column. FRIDAY Race: Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket The winner: Carla’s Way was impressive. She raced on the pace, tracking the leader Spiritual and travelling with zest and enthusiasm. She was a little unbalanced between the three and two furlong poles but quickened up well using her huge stride.
Juvenile Watch: Newmarket tips from Ross Millar
Our two-year-old racing expert Ross Millar shares his thoughts on the slew of high-class juveniles races coming up with insight and tips for the Rockfel, Royal Lodge, Middle Park and Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Enjoy all the action on the Rowley Mile live on Racing TV. AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI ROCKFEL STAKES When: Friday, 3.00 Newmarket Distance: 7f Class: Group 2 SHUWARI looks to hold outstanding claims.
Juvenile Watch: 10-1 Saturday tip plus unraced youngster to note
Juvenile expert Ross Millar explains why he will be against Iberian when he runs at Newmarket plus also reveals an exclusive youngster to follow from Charlie Fellowes, as well as a 10-1 fancy for Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes. Click here to watch Racing TV for FREE! The Betfred Champagne Stakes at Doncaster last week lacked strength in depth, although that has been said about races of this grade all season in Britain (undoubtedly, the talent is more plentiful in Ireland).
Juvenile Watch: big Classic claims for Angel and Longfellow
Ross Millar looks back at the two juvenile Group One contests at the Irish Champions Festival at the Curragh on Sunday and shares his insight on Fallen Angel and Henry Longfellow, queries tactics employed by Amo Racing and gets the latest from Ed Bethell on one to note. Moyglare Stud Stakes The first two home Fallen Angel and Vespertilio pulled a long way clear of the rest.
Juvenile Watch: Curragh tips plus an unraced colt to follow
Our Juvenile expert Ross Millar reveals an unraced youngster to follow, who trainer Dylan Cunha has high hopes for, plus also shares two selections for the Curragh on Sunday where he is taking on two of the hot favourites. Enjoy all of the action at the Irish venue live on Racing TV. Whilst much of the focus in the juvenile division is focussed on early speed and precocity, there are, of course, a large number of colts and fillies that develop at a slower rate.
Ross Millar's Juvenile Watch: Task Force has star quality
STAR OF THE WEEK Regular readers of this column surely would not expect me to pass over the chance to mention my favourite filly of the season – Relief Rally. She again showcased her acceleration and tenacity when coming from an unfavourable position to win the Lowther Stakes at York. I’ll be in her camp wherever she lines up this season given she’s demonstrated an ability to act on all types of ground.
Juvenile Watch: Ross Millar's tips for York on day three and four
Race: Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes - 3.00pm. Selection: Johannes Brahms. I have this between the top two in the market - Kylian and Johannes Brahms. The Karl Burke-trained Kylian has to be respected as he has the advantage of experience and posted an impressive performance on his penultimate start at Sandown. However, this will be his sixth start in three months, and I wonder if that might take its toll.
Juvenile Watch: Ross Millar's tips for York on day one and two
The Sky Bet Ebor Festival at York takes centre stage this week, with plenty of Group action for the two-year-olds, as well as some competitive nursery handicaps. Here are my thoughts for the first two days. Best of luck, and don't forget to watch every race live on Racing TV.__ Race: Tattersalls Acomb Stakes__ - 2.25pm Selection: Cogitate. Vandeek’s win in the Group One Prix Morny on Sunday delivered a healthy boost to the form of Ballymount Boy, so it’s no surprise to see him as favourite.
Juvenile Watch: Two big-priced fancies for next year's Guineas
Ross Millar shares his expert analysis on some of the leading Juveniles we have seen this season plus reveals a number of youngsters to add to your Racing TV Tracker. Our Juvenile expert also suggests a couple of ante-post bets are large odds for next year's QIPCO 1000 Guineas. With the Qatar Goodwood Festival in the rear-view mirror, and the Sky Bet Ebor Festival at York just around the corner, it seemed like an ideal time to give a half-term report on the juvenile class of 2023.
Juvenile Watch: Spanish Poet makes deep impression
Ross Millar, our expert on the two-year-olds, nominates his star of the week and nominates several youngsters to keep a close eye on. STAR OF THE WEEK I’m loathed to get overly invested in juvenile form that’s obtained on testing ground. Physical strength and balance are pre-requisites in dealing with soft going and by nature of their age juveniles can often lack both. That said I was deeply impressed by Spanish Poet at Sandown last Tuesday. Watch how he won above.
Juvenile Watch: 16-1 Henry Longfellow makes Classic appeal
Our two-year-old expert Ross Millar nominates his star performer from last week, an improver to note now qualified for handicaps and two antepost tips for the 1000 and 2000 Guineas in his latest must-read bulletin. STAR OF THE WEEK Cogitate made a lovely start at Newbury last week The maiden and novice contests from Newbury are always worth watching as they invariably throw up some above average performers.
Juvenile Watch: City Of Troy, horses to follow and Super Sprint tip
Our juvenile expert Ross Millar shares his views on that Superlative performance from City Of Troy and the star colt’s future prospects as well as some potential ‘winners in waiting’ and one fancied to go well in Saturday’s Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury, live on Racing TV. Star of the week It’s fair to say this is an easy pick this week after City Of Troy turned the Group Two Superlative Stakes into a procession thanks to a stunning performance on the July Course at Newmarket.
Juvenile Watch: July Festival two-year-old tips
Our two-year-old expert Ross Millar picks out his star of the week from the recent action - a colt who might just continue to surprise - and looks forward to the three Group races for juveniles at the Boodles July Festival and shares his pick for each. See what happens live on Racing TV! Star of the week It’s perhaps no surprise that, as we head into the height of the Flat season, it becomes harder and harder to pick just one standout performance from the previous week.
Ross Millar: Royal Ascot juvenile races review and eye-catchers
Well, what do you make of that? Royal Ascot produced some top class action but winners were hard to find. It was a frustrating week for the column. River Tiber got us off to the best possible start but even though Relief Rally, Elite Status and Soprano all hit the frame a second winner proved elusive. As the old maxim goes “if you aren’t wining, you’re learning” so below are my thoughts of each of the two-year old races from last week.
Royal Ascot tips: Ross Millar's bets for the juvenile races
Ross Millar, our Juvenile Watch columnist, shares his selections for Friday's Albany Stakes plus Saturday's Chesham. Next week, don't miss his verdicts on all the two-year-old races plus horses to follow. FRIDAY Race: 2.30 Albany Stakes The most competitive race for two-year old fillies of the week. Carla’s Way was impressive in her debut win at Doncaster, when despite failing to settle in the early stages she was still able to finish off her race well.
Royal Ascot tips: Ross Millar's bets for the two-year-old races
The wait is over...Royal Ascot is finally here! Five days of ultra-competitive action, and the two-year old division looks full of quality this year. I’m confident that a couple of bona-fide superstars will be unearthed this week. You will see plenty written this week about working out draw bias, and pace maps, but in the Juvenile division, I believe such endeavours are largely fruitless (although draw bias may become apparent later in the week).
The evolution of alternative fuels
During the 2023 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Ross Millar, Loss Prevention Associate, Steamship Mutual, presented the evolution of alternative fuels from the P&I Club perspective. The maritime sector is currently evaluating a range of alternative fuels to replace conventional fuels, each with their own set of advantages—and drawbacks.
Juvenile Watch: Winners in waiting, a trainer to follow and more
Juvenile expert Ross Millar shares his expert insight on a potential star we saw in action last week plus has a number of horses to follow, as well a red-hot trainer operating at an impressive strike-rate with his two-year-olds. Juvenile Watch: Cam Hardie shares his views and horses to follow
Ross Millar's latest column includes some observations from jockey Cam Hardie plus he nominates his star of the week and horses to follow. FROM THE SADDLE The offspring of Calyx are worth looking out for Throughout the season I’ll endeavour to get the opinion of jockeys, on not only individual two-year olds but also the first season sires. First up Cam Hardie. _Which first season sire has impressed you the most? _ I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from the stock of Calyx.
Juvenile Watch: a Thursday fancy, National hero and horses to follow
In his weekly column on the two-year-olds, Ross Millar suggests a bet for Thursday and has more youngsters for your Racing TV trackers. Add an unlimited number of horses into your Racing TV Tracker and never miss a winner again! Click here for more details. ONE FOR THURSDAY 5.50 Carlisle: Mauna Loa This Richard Fahey-trained daughter of Dark Angel caught my eye when making her debut at Thirsk two weeks ago. Having jumped smartly she was taken back by Oisin Orr and was settled off the pace.
Juvenile Watch: River Tiber will relish moving up in distance
Ross Millar reflects on a number of taking performances by two-year-olds in the past week, nominates a winner in waiting and explains why he's still no fan of the Brocklesby form. It was heartening to see both juvenile contests at Naas on Sunday being won by a colt and filly that had been awarded this column’s ‘performance of the week’ after their respective debut runs. A brief look at my social media feed told me that the response to the performance River Tiber delivered was mixed.
Juvenile Watch: Natural Force packs a punch for Tate
Ross Millar's weekly column on the two-year-olds includes his star performer from the past week, winners in waiting plus Johnny Hassett revealing unraced youngsters to look out for. STAR PERFORMER James Tate is not a name I’d normally associate with winning debutants. However, he bucked that trend earlier in the season when Blue Storm made a winning debut at Newmarket and on Saturday he repeated the feat courtesy of a striking debut from Natural Force at Ascot.
Juvenile Watch: winners in waiting plus Hannon's eyecatchers
Ross Millar was celebrating the success of Mawj on Sunday having tipped the Classic winner at 25-1 ante-post last year for the QIPCO 1000 Guineas! In his latest Juvenile Watch column, he reveals his star performance from last week, a couple of potential winners in waiting plus much more.
Juvenile Watch: eyecatchers plus unraced youngsters to follow
Ross Millar, our Juvenile expert, discusses his star performance from last week plus reveals a couple of horses who caught his eye recently that are worth adding to your Racing TV Tracker. Ross also shares information on some unraced yearlings who could be potential stars.
Juvenile Watch: a trio who impressed and a diamond in wating
In his weekly column that focuses on the two-year-olds, Ross Millar nominates more horses to follow and a sire to keep a close eye on. PERFORMANCES OF THE WEEK I’m going to stick to last week’s assertion that it might yet be a little early to comfortably use the usual term ‘star’ so for one last week (I promise) I’ll stick to ‘performance of the week’.
Juvenile Watch: Dreamer could be real thing at Newmarket
Ross Millar identifies an unraced colt to look out for at Newmarket on Wednesday plus reflects on eye-catching performances by two-year-olds in the past week. Maximum Impact romped home at Leicester ONE FOR WEDNESDAY Newmarket maidens often throw up decent performers and the 4.10 race on Wednesday is unlikely to be an exception. I’ve heard from more than one well-connected source that Dorothy Lawrence is well regarded by connections.
Juvenile Watch: Expect plenty of improvement from Brighter
Juvenile Watch is back! In his first column of the new season, Ross Millar explains why he will be keen to oppose the Brocklesby winner next time out, discusses a couple of high-profile first season sires plus pinpoints a youngster, trained by Aidan O'Brien, who he expects plenty of improvement from. BROCKLESBY REVIEW: The first two-year old race of the season has historically been a race for early precocious types that then, generally, fail to progress any further.
Ross Millar's weekend reflections plus top tips for Monday
I must confess that I didn’t feel ready for the Flat season to begin on Saturday. However, while the slow-motion finishes – more resemblant of three-mile chase finishes – did little to stir my appetite, the stories attached to the racing certainly did. The victory of Doddie’s Impact in the Brocklesby Stakes quelled any concerns pessimists may have had about the ability of teenager Billy Loughnane to transfer his red-hot form from the all-weather to the turf.
Horse racing tips for Monday: Ross Millar's best bets
After the excitement of the Cheltenham Festival, the recent National Hunt action has certainly had a quieter feel to it. However, there were two performances that caught my eye over the weekend. The Dan Skelton-trained Heltenham bolted up in what I thought was a competitve handicap chase at Newbury where he travelled strongly up the home straight to win in a canter.
Ross Millar: my ante-post Lucky 15 for Cheltenham in 2024
I hope you all enjoyed successful Cheltenham Festival. I felt it was one of the most compelling and certainly one of the most emotional for many years. My social media feed this week served as a reminder that the joy of finding a Cheltenham winner is amplified if you’re able to add the words “I backed them ante-post”. Personally, it’s not an opinion I hold but in the interest of a bit of fun I thought if you can’t beat them, then why not join them.
Ross Millar: my Monday tips and four at big prices for Cheltenham
Our Monday tipster Ross Millar likes three runners from Taunton and, on the eve of the Festival, nomimates a fancy at double-figure odds for each day of the Cheltenham Festival. Enjoy every moment live on Racing TV! The wait is nearly over; the Cheltenham Festival is little more than a day away. In a break from the usual format, I'm substituting the normal review of the weekend for one selection for each day of the Festival - with the small caveat that they needed to be at a double-figure price.
Cheltenham Festival: verdicts on key Britain v Ireland clashes
Ross Millar takes a closer look at the key clashes between British and Irish-trained horses in the key contest at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival plus provides his verdict. Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices' Chase 🐴 Jonbon vs El Fabiolo 🐴 When: 2.10pm, Tuesday. Past 10 years: UK 5, IRE 5. A race that I very much look forward to each year, with this renewal looking no different as we have a fascinating clash to savour.
Monday horse racing tips: Ross Millar's best bets
As much as I love the Cheltenham Festival, it has, in recent years, largely revolved around a small number of trainers who operate exceptionally large training establishments, and this can often mean that many of the ‘smaller’ owners and trainers can struggle to get a look in. With Cheltenham drawing ever closer, this weekend’s action was truly all about the feel-good stories involving those who are often out of the spotlight.
Monday horse racing tips: Ross Millar's three best bets
As a proud Welshman, and big rugby fan, my patriotism is currently being severely tested. Happily, though, my fellow Welshmen, Sam Thomas and Christian Williams, were able to deliver winning performances as, between them, they landed the two big handicap chases on Saturday. The Christian Williams-trained Cap Du Nord was well supported to land back-to-back victories in the Coral Trophy Handicap Chase, just a week on from winning the Swinley Handicap Chase at Ascot.
Monday's free racing tips: Easy winner at Catterick?
This weekend certainly lacked the quality and quantity of the previous one but there was still plenty of interesting racing to be enjoyed. I was amused (though not surprised) by the dramatic over-reaction to Jonbon’s five-length win in the Kingmaker – they don’t all win like Constitution Hill every time! Personally I felt it was a perfectly acceptable prep run when a bigger target is just four weeks away.
Monday horse racing tips: Four best bets from Ross Millar
After last week's 8-1 winner, our columnist Ross Millar bids to continue his good start to the year with four tips across Monday's jumps cards. Enjoy all the action from Huntingdon and Punchestown live on Racing TV. This season has been a bit feast or famine hasn’t it? The cold weather halted plenty of jump racing over the last few weeks, which I must confess left me feeling at rather a loose end.
Horse racing tips for Monday: Ross Millar's best bets
Ross Millar tipped two winners from two selections last Monday and bids to get the week off to a flying start with his fancies at Kempton and Ffos Las. 2.00 Ffos Las: Kap Chidley Both the Nigel Twiston–Davies-trained Uncle Bert and the Nicky Henderson-trained Propelled arrive here with decent placed form to their name, but although Uncle Bert will appreciate the testing conditions, it was apparent that Propelled found his speed blunted on soft ground at this track last time.
Ross Millar: weekend reflections plus three bets for Monday
What a hugely enjoyable weekend of racing we had, with good quality action coming from Warwick and Kempton on Saturday and Punchestown in Ireland on Sunday. The training accolade for the weekend must surely go to Sam Thomas, as his Iwilldoit galloped resolutely to the line to win the Wigley Group Classic Chase at Warwick. To have him in such good form after 383 days away from the track was a tremendous piece of training and confirms him as an exceptionally capable operator.
Horse racing tips: Monday best bets from Ross Millar
Our columnist and tipster Ross Millar shares his three best bets for Monday’s action and the opening week of a new year. Enjoy all the action from Ayr live on Racing TV. And so ends a bumper festive period of racing. The freezing conditions in early December proved to be a blessing in disguise as cards all across the country benefitted from the backlog of horses needing a run, resulting in good-sized fields and an abundance of exciting racing.
Paddy's Pick 5: tips for our free-to-play Boxing Day game
Ross Millar takes a look at this week's special Paddy's Pick 5 game for Christmas. Enter below for your chance to win all or part of the £100,000 jackpot! Leg 1 1.35 Wetherby: Fanion D’Estruval The first leg of Paddy’s Pick 5 is a complex puzzle. Kalashnikov and Shan Blue are talented but are returning from long layoffs. In the case of the former a 648-day absence surely means he’ll improve for this.
Ross Millar's horse racing tips: Best bet for Monday
Any family containing a racing fan are going to experience unheard levels of organisation and preparation this Christmas. Groceries are bought, trees are decorated, and Christmas lights installed…my Twitter feed even reported rumours of a Christmas version of the spring clean! Yes, the great British weather caused yet another decimation of weekend racing with only Thurles on Sunday surviving.
