Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Reviewing gear for a large outdoor gear website.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Nope.

How is social media changing news?

Social media makes news faster, my dynamic and open to everyone for commenting.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Peter Parker, aka Spiderman

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Using all your resources to help your readers as much as possible.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Quick, relevant and to the point.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Macbook Air, Evernote and Ulysses for writing are my main tools.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook is the most informative for me.

Who do you wish followed you?

Kraig Becker and Steve Casimiro are two adventure journalists I read a lot.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love finding out about new ideas and products and digging into the story behind them.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope. I don't think we had one.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Keep writing.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

For new women's handbags. Not that close to what I write about.

What's your favorite drink?

Ice-cold apple cider on a hot day. A Monte Cristo coffee on a cold one.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Hiking, running or the CrossFit gym.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

GearJunkie is great for adventure news and gear info.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

As an outdoors writer, people think we spend most of our time outside. The reality is we spend a lot of our time on the computer.
