What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a volunteer with our community newpaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
It's been a while! But I have one in my office from circa 1903.
How is social media changing news?
In Canada, social media doesn't share the news anymore. That says all you need to know.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
As a writer I get the privilege to indulge my curiosity every day!
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email messages, please.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Google docs, Grammerly, ChatGPT
What's your favorite social network?
If I have choose one...LinkedIn. It's usually an escape from the gossip and drama.
Why did you become a journalist?
I express my thoughts better through the written word. I get to explore the world around me and concisely share it with others.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote an article for Roonga with a focus on period poverty. It gave me a change to tackle a major issue I was unfamiliar with.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write from your heart. Seek truth. Be curious.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime...as long as it's by email.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Pitches that show the pitcher didn't do their research.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee. Gin and tonic.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Playing cards, at a trivia tournament, at the theatre, or with family.
