Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing community interest stories for my small-town newspaper

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I learned how to type on a manual one and my first newspaper did not have computers for our use, just for the editors and typesetters.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

my phone, Signal, Haven, anything useful

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, for impact. However, depending on the audience I'm trying to reach when doing digital marketing, I like Instagram, LinkedIn & TikTok

Who do you wish followed you?

Woodward, Bernstein, Ellsberg, & Snowden

Why did you become a journalist?

To shine a light on things that Americans have a hard time looking at - to do that in engaging ways.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. Anything they would let me. Movie reviews were particularly fun.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

One about a Massachusetts humane society helping to save wild mustangs being pulled off public rangeland by the Dept of the Interior.

What's your favorite drink?

Italian Margarita

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On my phone or dancing to EBM Industrial Goth music

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Always The Washington Post. (Since I was a teen and first understood its sacrifices and impact re Pentagon Papers to Watergate to now).

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

The public thinks that to cover a story I have to take sides.
