Neighbors raise questions about cell tower for New Canaan
By Steve and Miriam Sosnick, Hugh and Judy Wiley, Joe and Kathy Sweeney, Lynn Vaughan, Roy Abramowitz, Marisa Percy, Shiva Sarram and Drew Pearson, Christine and Greg Pesaturo, Mack and Deirdre Rajkowski, Michelle and Jared Remington, Katherine and Jeremy Maco, and Michael and Kathleen Conover Updated 2:30 pm EDT, Tuesday, October 15, 2019 This cell tower design with pine-like boughs to camouflage the pole, seen here right of center, is what is called for in the plan for a tower on Soundview...
Letter: Nothing is ‘askew’ in the budget process
Editor, Advertiser: It is apparent that Tom Butterworth does not understand the concept of diminishing economic returns on excessive spending. Firstly at 60% of the overall town budget, it is the responsibility of the Board of Education and the fiduciary responsibility of Town Council-elected officials, like Tom Butterworth, to safeguard taxpayer dollars from excessive wasteful spending. Rubber stamping excessive wants vs. needs is a dereliction of duty to the electorate.
Letter: Fake News claim is media’s fault
I am perplexed that the Advertiser editorial elected to address another Trump Hysteria Syndrome symptom “Fake News” and join the coordinated national initiative of the Boston Globe during a week of pressing local issues. The undermining of your voice and role as journalists is not the result of the President and his supporters picking up the fake news torch. The media has demonized over half the country as clingers, deplorables and crazies.
New Canaan: Letter: The hidden tax
Question: What is the largest percentile tax increase New Canaanites have endured over the past 10 years? Answer: The devaluation of their residential real estate — The Hidden Tax. We do not have a lot of company. According to a monthly sentiment index from Fannie Mae nationally: “Supply is tight and prices are soaring. Consumer attitudes remain resilient going into the spring/summer buying season.” Nationally home prices made their biggest jump in four years in March 2018, according to Corelogic.
Letter: Cell tower on Soundview Lane not needed
Dwight Sipler’s March 13 letter to the editor praising Keith Richey’s planned cell tower in a residential area as “At least someone is doing something,” “not bad precedent,” and “the income from a cell tower really isn’t that great,” is incorrect. The cell coverage in the area is quite adequate. How do I know?
Letter: Dear God
When the Hebrews were stranded in the desert they gave up on God and started to idolize a golden calf statue, rejecting the God that freed them from the Pharaohs. But when famine, sickness and death ensued they blamed God and asked him why. It appears nothing has been learned from our biblical teachings. After the horrific premeditated murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. God is blamed again.
Letter: In support of Mike Mauro, labor lawyer | New Canaan Advertiser
Attorney Mike Mauro is the only correct candidate to assume the Town Council seat vacated by Ken Campbell. Mike Mauro was vetted during the two Town Council-candidate-only, televised Republican Caucus debates responding to questions from and moderated by the editor of the New Canaan Advertiser and New Canaanite. He also was vetted in the written responses to the published media Q and A forums that appeared in the Advertiser.
New Canaan: Letter: Andrew Brooks for treasurer
As a practicing Certified Public Accountant over the past 40 years with the Big Four accounting firms, a major international financial conglomerate and founder of my Certified Public Accounting firm in 1987 I can attest to the outstanding performance of New Canaan’s current treasurer, Andrew Brooks. You do not need to be a Certified Public Accountant to function as Treasurer for our municipality.
New Canaan: Vegas Shooting: Where are we headed in wake?
We awoke today to the senseless slaughter of our fellow Americans in Las Vegas. Once again our nation mourns. My first text this morning was from my 18-year-old daughter, a freshman in college 537 miles from home. She texted: “I heard about Las Vegas, omg.” “Why would someone do this?” I answered: “I have no answer to that.” However the truth is I did not want to overburden my daughter. There is an answer.
Letter: In wake of Vegas shooting, where are we headed? | New Canaan Advertiser
We awoke today to the senseless slaughter of our fellow Americans in Las Vegas. Once again our nation mourns. New Canaan: Why I am running for Town Council
I offer my constituents “real reform” and a “real voice.” I have shown that I can identify and outline procedures to implement “best practices” into the Town’s financial, accounting and managerial system(s). My family and I have been town residents for 21 years. My daughter graduated New Canaan High School this past June 20. I believe it is time for the Town Council to have a practicing attest and forensic CPA seated.
Letter: Rep. Jim Himes is unhinged | New Canaan Advertiser
Jim Himes (D-Conn., 4th,) is unhinged and his remarks as reported in the New York Post – “Congressman begs Electoral College voters to block Trump” is both deplorable and harmful to America. Jim Himes cannot accept the fact that his presidential candidate who called 50% of Americans ‘deplorables’ and who told a congressional hearing on Benghazi: “What difference does it make?” when asked about the deaths of United States servicemen and a United States Ambassador.
Letter: ‘Stamfordizing’ New Canaan must stop
P&Z’s consideration of the Merritt residence proposal is preposterous. There are currently in excess of 400 homes and condos for sale in New Canaan (an all-time high) at already depressed prices. The overall national and state economy is at the abyss of another recession. Connecticut loses approximately 500 residents a week. Flooding the market with more condos is the wrong answer for the general taxpaying populous of New Canaan.
Board of Finance needs to be elected
It is interesting how those who aim to keep the Board of Finance appointed are elected officials or past elected officials who want to keep control over the Board of Finance. They do not get the problem with lack of segregation of duties. An elected Board of Finance (BOF) would be more receptive to public desires and not complacent with the wishes of the executive and other legislative branches. What is the fear of a BOF that answers to the taxpayer citizen and not the political bosses?
Kudos and Criticism
I extend my respect and thanks to Town Council members Kevin Moynihan, John Engel, Christa Kenin and Christina Ross for their actions at the Feb. 24 Town Council meeting and professionally addressing the issue pertaining to acceptance of the Audit Report d/t/d June 30, 2015. In my professional opinion their vote is correct.
Stop tax and spending increases
As a citizen of New Canaan who has seen the town tax on my home and automobiles raised in the aggregate approximately 14% over the last three years of the current administration, I deplore any approval by Board of Finance of the proposed town budget. An increase of $10,900,000 in tax revenue would equate to an average increase of $1,321 per household (assumes 8,250 households). This excessive spending on over zealous projects must end.
