Education requirements
A warm body with minimal preparation is not enough to be a teacher. Even knowledge in a specific skill is not enough. You want teachers to have a college degree in education with the training and educational exposure that goes it. Arizona should want them to pass tenure, and keep updated.
School questions
The fragmented educational system in Arizona is shameful. Since tax dollars are being given through vouchers to religious schools, home schooling, private and for profit schools, do they have to follow the same rules and regulations and requirements as public schools? There are all kinds of monitoring, and instructional stipulations put upon public schools and its teachers but what about other kinds of schools?
School Vouchers...unconstitutional
As an educator for over 30 years, I was sadden by Arizona's expansive voucher system and found it to be unconstitutional. Two of the three concepts from the Constitution's First Amendment, which form the basis for the Supreme Court interpretation are: "no coercion in religious matters; no expectation to support religion against one's will". All support must be voluntary. Those $7000 vouchers paid to those choosing to go to religious schools are unconstitutional.
Letter: Religion in Power?
Catholicism arrived in the Supreme Court and it is a concern. Women are subservient in the Catholic Church. It is run by a hierarchy from priest to pope of mostly old men. After 53 years as a Catholic, I left because of its treatment of women. That was before their global pedophile crimes and the criminal cover up. Plus there is the recent revelations of murderous treatment of indigenous children in residential schools.
Separation of Church and State
It is disturbing that the separation of church and state is being jeopardized by the Catholic and Evangelical coalition operating in the right wing of the Republican Party. It wants to impose their religious beliefs and values on the rest of us through political policy or law. That happening will weaken democracy. With religious doctrines come restrictions. The Supreme Court justices who are Catholic should excuse themselves from acting on Roe vs. Wade.
