Review: Black Diamonds and the Blue Brazil at the Royal Lyceum Theatre
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. Gary McNair’s brand-new stage adaptation of Ron Ferguson’s book, Black Diamonds and the Blue Brazil, is a wholesome and largely light-hearted play, although the audience members who get the most out of the performance are likely the ones already familiar with Cowdenbeath and its regional football club scene.
Review: The Red Shoes at Festival Theatre
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5. Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures production of The Red Shoes is incredibly captivating, impactful and thought-provoking. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1845 fairytale and the 1948 film co-directed by Powell and Pressburger, Bourne’s adaptation provides an expertly curated show that translates perfectly onto the stage.
Review: Balancing in Freedom at the Scottish Storytelling Centre
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5. Balancing in Freedom — written and performed by Iddo Oberski and co-directed by Mark Kydd — is an incredibly personal, thought-provoking and inspiring story simultaneously entertains and moves the audience. Multi-media elements are used to tell Oberski’s story of living with a disability and how discovering his ancestry’s connection to the Holocaust, although not his lived experience, has helped him navigate his way through his own grief.
Review: EUTC’s Metamorphoses
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. EUTC’s production of Metamorphoses was gaining traction long before opening night, due to the rumour that a swimming pool was being built for the set. Intrigued by this, my curiosity was certainly satisfied upon walking into Bedlam theatre and not only seeing the swimming pool built into the stage but also discovering that the usual seating arrangement for the audience had been changed.
Review: The History Boys
Upon walking into Bedlam Theatre, I was immediately struck by the set design for The History Boys. The lighting, created by hanging bulbs concealed within the pages of opened books and the adornment of origami cranes, effectively created an atmosphere of academia and an air of prestige. The History Boys, written by Alan Bennett and here directed by Lauren Green, focuses on a group of boys in sixth form in the mid-to-late 1980s.
“Not a question of if but when:” Should the UK ban social media for teens?
The question on a lot of people’s minds at the moment–particularly parents of young children and those campaigning for change–is whether Keir Starmer will follow in Australia’s footsteps and introduce a social media ban for children and teens under 16 in the UK. The ban was implemented on 10 December 2025 in Australia, and ever since there has been a lot of attention focused on working out its efficacy and success rate.
