My summer song
I share Olivia Rodrigo’s love for The Cure’s classic Just Like Heaven; the reference in her new single drop dead only fuelled my delusions that we’d be best friends. Yes, Olivia, I do know all the words to Just Like Heaven! In fact, the song appears on pretty much every playlist I make, but there’s something about its hypnotic guitar riff, lilting piano line, and euphoric lyrics that’s especially perfect for a sunset drive with the windows down.
The 26/27 Sabbs are here! A rundown of elections night
As the candidates and their campaign teams arrived, it was clear how much it meant to each of them. The atmosphere was understandably tense and thick with suspense, everyone keen to get the results out in the open. The night was expertly hosted by Aarya Shenoy and Callum Borkowski, who were able to cut through the nervousness and bring the energy to the night.

The rise of queerbaiting in TV
The LGBTQ+ audience is a powerful one, and their opinion often makes or breaks a show’s reputation. As drivers of online discourse and fandom culture, producers seek to appeal to their tastes, though these efforts often lack substance and are highly performative. Queerbaiting involves the misleading promotion of storylines to entice an LGBTQ+ audience and can take many forms.

The 68th Grammy awards: proof that music is political
Image Source: Sabrina Carpenter at BST Hyde Park by Ralph_PH on Wikkimedia Commons |https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Though the trivial online chatter of frustrated superfans and fashion sleuths was dwarfed by what became a collective statement by the music industry. With ‘ICE out’ badges on collars and declarations of ‘f**k ICE’ in acceptance speeches, the message was clear.
'Hamnet': moving or manipulative?
Image source: Raph_PH, Wikimedia Commons, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Directed by Chloe Zhao, Hamnet is a beautifully moving adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel, in which she imagines William Shakespeare’s family life and the personal tragedy that may have inspired his writing of Hamlet. O’Farrell speculates that the noted absence of the plague, or pestilence, in Shakespeare’s writings can be attributed to the trauma of losing of his son, Hamnet.
Fenwick’s festive window revealed...
The event was reserved for a small number of guests, including children and families from Fenwick’s partner institutions among select prize draw winners, and was not accessible to the public. Instead, the reveal was livestreamed across Fenwick’s social media platforms and ever since crowds have been gathering to enjoy the first taste of Christmas. The Fenwick Christmas window is an institution in the Geordie festive calendar; it has been an annual staple since it first appeared in 1971.

Our favourite celebrity looks from Paris Fashion Week
Image source: The Paris Photographer, Unsplash Though I am by no means a fashion expert, I love to judge celebrity looks. Whether that be on the red carpet at a film premiere or front row at a fashion show, there is often one in particular that stands out to me. My favourite celebrity look from this year’s Paris Fashion Week has to be Clairo’s elevated LBD from the Valentino show.

The perfect place for a wholesome weekend day out, the Quayside is home to the Sunday market, where you can find anything from books, candles and a sweet treat, to a crystal shaped like a toilet (true story).
Open for all: Newcastle University’s INSIGHTS public lectures
We are all guilty of degree tunnel vision. Swimming in readings and assignments, it can be difficult to look beyond the specificity of our individual studies. Though in doing so we deny ourselves the variety of academic opportunities that university life has to offer. A perfect example of these is Newcastle University’s Insights Public Lectures that are open to everyone, including students.

The Big Shop: what not to forget on your first trip to the supermarket
Source: Franki Chamaki, Unsplash So, here are some things to keep in mind that will make your life a lot easier. Don’t be too optimistic – Everyone starts off excited to cook for themselves at uni, but be careful not to overestimate your motivation as a chef. Remember, it’s three meals a day, every day from now until Christmas. Trust me, the novelty soon wears off.
The Lionesses Conquer Europe Again: England power through to win the Euros 2025
The Lionesses seemed to start the tournament on the back foot, losing their first group stage game to France two to one. Though they soon found their feet with two landslide victories against Wales (6-1) and the Netherlands (4-0), sending them safely through to the knockouts. Though England’s quarter-final match against Sweden was where the drama truly began.

It reflects Rome’s deep cultural significance as the centre of the Catholic Church, marking a moment of religious reflection and celebration that occurs only once every 25 years. The tradition has Jewish origins and represents a time of rest for the world when the Pope absolves the sins of all those who make a pilgrimage to Rome.
Can spin-offs ever be as good as the originals?
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Image: IMDb So, what makes a good spin-off? Crucially, the essence of the original needs to be maintained in order to satisfy the dedicated fans who hold the key to its success. Though the spin-off also needs to be exciting and relevant enough to be interesting and stand on its own in order to attract new, possibly younger, audiences.
