He was awarded the Governor General's Award for Fiction twice, for The Temptations of Big Bear (1973) and A Discovery of Strangers (1994) and won the Charles Taylor Prize for Of This Earth: a Mennonite Boyhood in the Boreal Forest (2006).

Nominees announced for Alberta Readers’ Choice Awards

Edmonton author Rudy Wiebe, whose novel Come Back recently won the City of Edmonton Book Prize, is one of five finalists for the Alberta Readers’ Choice Awards. Sponsored by the Edmonton Public Library, the Alberta Readers’ Choice Award is given annually for the best fiction or non-fiction book written by an Alberta author, as chosen by readers. The $10,000 prize is now in its sixth year. “The submissions were remarkable again this year,” said Linda Cook, CEO of the Edmonton Public Library.
