What was your first job as a journalist?
Freelance writer for my hometown newspaper.

It's made it more accessible and digestible for people, but it's also contributed to a lack of depth in order to snag scrolling readers.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Gale Weathers in SCREAM is the reason I wanted to be a journalist. As a child, I loved her ambition and attitude so much.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being unafraid to tell the truth.

I was page editor, then managing editor, then editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper, The Bird's Eye View.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Getting the chance to phone interview presidential candidate Barack Obama in early 2008 was a big highlight.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
READ — and not just nonfiction/news. Fiction can help you improve storytelling skills and help you add flair where you can.
When's the best time to pitch you?
M-F/8 a.m. -8 p.m.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee. Iced usually. Hot if it's really cold outside.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Lying down with my eyes closed, trying to turn what's on my computer off inside my head.
