He’s joined by Kevin Kuehner, from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and Ron Meiners, retired Root River Soil and Water Conservation District Manager. The episode explores the question: How do you build a soil and water conservation project that brings everyone to the table?
Georgia Peanuts: Scout Fields for Lesser Cornstalk Borers, Spider Mites
Lesser cornstalk borer in peanuts. Photo: University of Georgia As I drive across the state I see areas that have obviously received decent rainfall over the past month. On the other hand, there has been no measurable rain at my house in four weeks, and I am not the only one. It is DRY, and it is no secret that lesser cornstalk borers (LCB) thrive in hot, dry weather. If you haven’t scouted your peanuts in a while, now is the time to do so. If LCB is present, now is the time to treat for them.
Minnesota: Soybean Aphids - 2 New Insecticides Available
Soybean Aphid. Photo: Purdue University Entomology Extension Soybean aphids can now be found in some soybean fields, particularly in fields where soybeans were planted early. Generally, both the percent of plants infested and the average number of aphids per plant remain low. It is too early to know what will come of these soybean aphid infestations for 2019. However, if fields reach treatable levels this year, there are now two additional insecticides available for soybean aphid management.
Texas LRGV: Cotton Being Defoliated; Sesame Harvest Nears
General Situation Another week of temperatures in the 100s and nights right at 80F in the LRGV. However, it seems there might be some potential showers forecasted for next week to cool off, but we will see. Heat Units continue to increase as we noticed on average about 30% open bolls in cotton this week. This week we were finally able to finish harvesting the last of our grain sorghum variety trials with yields averaging at 5500 to 6500 lbs per acre. Cotton Very clean week in the cotton fields.
Texas West Plains Cotton: All Quiet on the Insect Front
I began finding blooms and small bolls on Monday, July 15, mostly in Cochran County. Plant mapping data indicates that area cotton is going into bloom with 8.5 nodes above white flower. This places first bloom in most fields near July 25, with remaining fields hitting first bloom sometime in August. Just recall that August 20 is the date when we can say with some confidence that a boll formed on that day will have time to mature out.
Rice Update: Avoids Tropical Storm Damage, Harvest Days Away
Rice being harvested in Prairie County, Arkansas. Photo: Fred Miller, University of Arkansas The rice market doldrums continue as new crop harvest looms on the horizon and the market looks for news to process ahead of the harvest interval. The governmental reports showed a very dismal export sales number which is very far away from the volumes noted in the past few weeks.
DTN Cotton Close: Market Stays on Bearish Path
Mid season cotton field. Photo: Larry Stalcup, AgFax Media The cotton market posted a new low and new low close Thursday amid disappointing exports-sales. Of course, such bearish action of making life-of-contract lows has become quite the habit for the market. To that end, there has been a daily pattern of rising open interest with declining volume. Our interpretation of that behavior suggests speculators continued to build upon their record net position, but ever quietly so given the low volume.
