What was your first job as a journalist?

part-time sportswriter for the Columbia Tribune in Columbia, MO. Covered high school sports and non rev-gen sports at Mizzou.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes, but only as a musical instrument.

How is social media changing news?

Greater emphasis on "now". Good: we have greater, quicker access to info. Bad: fact-checking often plays second-fiddle to the "now.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Philip K. Dick

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means to have a voice, to share it, and to equally share other's voice on a particular topic.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Dr. Phil's #teensaccused. How can someone who considers himself to be so smart, have no social awareness?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

First and foremeost, in song. But, email will do.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop, smart phone, voice recorder.

love covering sports. tapped out athletic talent my freshman year in college

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The Turk (for American Way Mag): How NFL teams deliver the bad news to players who didn't make the roster for the upcoming season.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't quit if you have a true passion. Read, read, and read some more. Be bold in interviews and in pitching your talent to publications.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime, except Thursdays at 10am Central. Somewhat superstitious about that.
