Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, as a kid I would sit at my grandmother's old Olivetti and literally retype articles from magazines.

How is social media changing news?

It's giving a false impression of travel - not everything is about a selfie. But this makes the true journo's job that much more critical.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You are entrusted with someone else's story. Be that a place, a person or a past event. You. Do it justice. Tell the story.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is always best, I find it easier to manage the admin that way.

Why did you become a journalist?

I came to this gig late in life, but have always been a storyteller at heart. Now I get to tell stories for a living. Priceless.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Get up for that sunrise. Pitch your idea. Hone your skill. Read, incessantly.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time really, I'm pretty meticulous about managing my emails, since I'm so often away from my laptop.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

My camera's in hand, chasing down the best sunrise in Africa I've experienced to date. Until tomorrow that is!

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That travel writers are always on holiday! It's time-consuming creating content that inspires travel in a reader, but so rewarding.
