Hockey East Notebook - 10/8/2015

The games may have been just exhibitions, but last weekend, 10 of the 12 teams in Hockey East opened up their season with practice games against teams hailing from the Great North. Teams from Hockey East combined to be 8-2 against these Canadian squads, with the only losses by Boston College and Vermont. Providence and Northeastern were the biggest winners of the weekend, both slaughtering Simon Fraser University, winning 9-1 and 10-2 respectively.

By: Ryan Fallon BOSTON – The college hockey season ended five months ago at the TD Garden. Today, a new one began in the same place. The rink on Causeway Street played host to Hockey East’s annual media day, with the first games now just a few short weeks away. We’ll have additional coverage coming in the next few days, but for now here’s a snippet of what took place. The day kicked off with the release of the coaches poll.

Your New Home for Huskies Sports
Over the past year, I gradually came to realize that our website needed some upgrades if we were to meet our own standards for coverage of Northeastern athletics. After a little planning and some hard work, we’ve unveiled this: a faster and sleeker WRBBSports.com. A huge thank you to WRBB’s Webmaster Stefan Cepko and Finance Director Josh Brown for helping to make this happen. Take a look around.

PREVIEW: Men’s hockey takes on UNH in Hockey East Quarterfinals
By Josh Brown and Ryan Fallon The #14 Northeastern Huskies (18-12-4, 10-8-2 in Hockey East) needed just one point in the last weekend of regular season play to secure home ice advantage for the Hockey East Quarterfinals. They played a Boston University team which had one of its worst seasons in years. But they couldn’t get one.
Men’s hockey falls flat, swept by BU; will travel to UNH in Hockey East Quarterfinals
By Josh Brown In one weekend all the hopes of a home playoff game at Matthews Arena were squashed for Huskies fans after the Boston University Terriers (10-20-4, 5-12-13) swept Northeastern (18-12-4, 10-8-2) in a home-and-home series. The loss drops Northeastern to fifth in Hockey East, where they will have to travel to Durham to play the fourth seed University of New Hampshire in two weeks in a best of three series to move on to the Hockey East Semifinals at the TD Garden.
Men’s hockey grabs 3 points from Maine, moves into 3rd place in Hockey East
By Josh Brown The #9 Northeastern Huskies (18-10-4) hockey team has clinched a first-round bye in the Hockey East tournament, after picking up 3 huge points against Maine (15-11-4) despite playing without captain Josh Manson, Matt Benning and Dalen Hedges. The Huskies fell behind 2-0 early in Friday’s game after a Connor Leen goal at the end of the first, followed by a Steven Swavely goal just 24 seconds into the second period gave the Black Bears the early lead.
Men’s basketball falls to William & Mary, 81-67, in Williamsburg
By Jeremy Leopold Marcus Thorton may not be a senior, but the junior William & Mary (17-10, 9-5 CAA) guard put up another stellar performance in a lopsided 81-67 victory over the Northeastern Huskies (9-20, 6-9 CAA) on the Tribe’s Senior Night. All five William & Mary’s starters were seniors playing their final game in Kaplan Arena. But it was Thorton coming off the bench (he still logged 32 minutes) who stole the show, putting up 25 points along with four assists and two rebounds.
Men’s hockey holds on, beats UMass 5-4
By Josh Brown Despite three, late third period UMass-Amherst (8-19-4) goals, the Northeastern Huskies (17-10-3) were able to outlast the Minutemen 5-4, to claim fourth place in Hockey East at the end of the weekend. The 17th win on the season for Northeastern is its highest win total since the 2008-2009 season.
Men’s hockey drops Beanpot heartbreaker
By Josh Brown Close but just short. That was the case for the #12 Northeastern Huskies (16-10-3) Monday night in the Beanpot Championship as they fell 4-1 to the #1 ranked Boston College Eagles (22-4-3), in what could arguably be called Northeastern’s best executed game of the season. The win is Boston College’s 5th consecutive Beanpot title, and the second straight against the Huskies.
Men’s hockey falls flat, loses to UMass 3-0
By Josh Brown In Hockey East only one thing is certain. Anybody can win on any given night. That was certainly the case Friday night as the Umass-Amherst Minutemen (8-16-4) defeated the Northeastern Huskies (16-9-3) 3-0 in convincing fashion on a night where they out-shot the Huskies 48-27. “It’s fun when you feel good about the process, and when the end result matches how you feel about the 60 minutes prior to it,” Minutemen Head Coach John Micheletto said after the win.
Men’s hockey downs Harvard 6-0, moves on to face BC for Beanpot title
By Josh Brown For the third time in four years the Northeastern Huskies will play in the Beanpot Championship game. The Huskies defeated Harvard 6-0 in the Semifinals Monday night at the TD Garden. The win was Northeastern’s largest margin of victory in a Beanpot game since beating Boston College 6-1 in 2009. Six different Huskies scored in the winning effort. The Huskies will face Boston College in the championship game, who defeated Boston University 3-1 in the 8:00 game.

Men’s hockey tops Lowell, 4-1, at Frozen Fenway
By Joe Nolan In a sloppy affair at Fenway Park, Northeastern defeated UMass Lowell 4 – 1, pushing them up another notch in the Hockey East Standings to 2nd place. Witt made 47 saves as the Huskies improved to 13-6-3 overall (6-4-1 Hockey East). Less than ideal weather made for an unusual hockey game, and there was clearly an adjustment period for both teams from the start of the contest. The puck moved very slowly in the wet conditions, and neither team generated much offense in the 1st frame.
Pimm, Witt lead NU to stunning overtime victory over Providence
By Joe Nolan Braden Pimm scored to tie the game with only 34 seconds remaining in the third period and again just 12 seconds into overtime to lead the Huskies past the #6 Providence Friars at Schneider Arena Tuesday night. Outplayed most of the game, the surprise win improves Northeastern to 5-4-1 in Hockey East and 12-6-3 overall. The team sits at third place in the conference behind Providence and Boston College, but don’t look now, because seven other teams have games in hand.

Perhaps even more impressive for the Huskies was that four of the five goals (and six total points) came from freshmen skaters.
