BILLINGS, Mont. — Montana Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion rescued an injured 15-year-old hiker near Moon Lake in the Beartooth Mountains Aug. 20. The 1-189th GSAB responded to a search-and-rescue request from the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center after Red Lodge Fire Rescue and Search and Rescue requested assistance. The mission required helicopter hoist capabilities unavailable through civilian rescue assets.

Update to Montana National Guard Flooding Response
Fort Harrison, Mont. – At the request of local officials, the Montana National Guard is continuing to assist with Search and Rescue operations due to significant flooding in South Central Montana. Starting at 2:45 p.m. on Monday, the Montana National Guard began receiving requests to rescue stranded civilians using our military aircraft with hoist capability. Two helicopters were dispatched to assist. The first helicopter rescued two people in Roscoe, Mont. and a further two in Fromberg, Mont.

The Pennsylvania National Guard’s Marksmanship Training Unit (MTU) held its annual Pennsylvania State Sniper Match at Fort Indiantown Gap Dec. 5-8. The winning team consisted of Sgt. Chavez and Spc. Schneider, with the Maryland National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment, which is a component of the 28th Infantry Division and therefore wears the keystone patch. That team will represent Maryland at the all-Guard Winston P. Wilson Sniper Championship Feb.
