1 Introduction Skin and mucus provide the first defence for all organisms against abrasions, infections and buffers environmental changes (Meyer and Seegers 2012). A key difference between marine organisms, such as fish and sharks, and many terrestrial organisms is that their skin lacks a dead, keratinised protective layer. Since fish and shark epidermis consists entirely of living cells, the protection from the mucus is paramount (Meyer et al. 2007).
Abstract Marine animal epidermal surfaces act as a transitional viral habitat—an epidermal ecotone—between tissues and the environment, supporting diverse tripartite relationships between animals, microbes, and viruses, which have yet to be investigated. In this review, we synthesize the viral ecology of marine animal epidermal tissues, surfaces, and aura biomes to identify knowledge gaps and highlight the value of marine animal epidermis as a novel model system for microbiome research.
