This is one of the best bits from Take 5. One of the greatest songwriters of all time sat down with Zan Rowe to open his songbook and dive deep into the making of five of his greatest. Paul McCartney has provided the soundtrack to billions of lives. His legacy in song is unparalleled; starting with The Beatles, who changed the game forever, he rolled on with his own solo career while building a new band in Wings, and collaborating with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Johnny Cash and Dave Grohl.

The Aussie artists from triple j's 1994 Eleven compilation
Get ready to turn it up to 11! We've dug up the compilation that sparked the idea of this radio show on Double J and we're spinning our favourite Aussie tunes for the 30th Anniversary of this classic CD. Released in 1994, the Eleven compilation from triple j's Three Hours of Power was a double disc collection of artists championed by the weekly heavy music show.
Adrianne Lenker's songs that get under the skin
Adrianne Lenker feels things deeply. You hear it in every one of her songs, whether solo, or with her band Big Thief. Lucky for us, she shares it all, and over the past few years has become one of the most promising and prolific songwriters around; making 6 albums on her own and 5 with her band. Her latest is “Bright Future” and it’s another stunning record of genius songwriting, and the inspiration for me to head back into the Take 5 archives and share this wonderful conversation from 2019.
This Is Spinal Tap turns 40 and we're turning it up to 11 to celebrate
This episode definitely goes up to 11! The most famous rock mockumentary of all time is turning 40 in March this year and we're celebrating the enduring legacy of Spinal Tap with a special edition of Eleven. Taking inspiration from Rob Reiner's 1984 film This is Spinal Tap, which followed the misadventures of the mythical English rock group, we're playing songs that embrace the majesty (and sometimes silly side) of rock.

life, lately
I came across a Jean Cocteau quote a few months ago that’s been flirting with me ever since: “Everything one does in life, even love, occurs in an express train racing toward death. To smoke opium is to get out of the train while it is still moving.
Nobody Knows You (when you're down & out)

7 Questions, or, an Interview
is a Paris-based singer/songwriter & producer from New Jersey. He’s been at it for 20+ years. A few days ago, Ryan asked me 7 questions about writing & creativity for his fantastic new Substack, organizing an accident, where he shares a new song every Wednesday as well as general musings on creative life in Paris. Q: Let's start by talking about Substack. I believe you were my first friend to set up shop on the platform.
Sundays are for Piano
A few weeks ago, I sat down at the piano and started thinking about someone in the USA who lives a life they were told they were supposed to want. This song, “Annabelle,” wrote itself within a few hours. As often happens when it comes to me and songwriting, when the chords and melody feel right, I just keep playing until the words find themselves. Despite performing as a pianist/singer since I was thirteen, the above video is the first footage of me playing a solo set (pianos/vocal/harmonica).

Ross Knight, an Aussie veteran of the grunge era, saw Pearl Jam's rise up close
He also initially fobbed off Eddie Vedder's attempts at friendship When Pearl Jam debuted Ten in August 1991, they had no idea how big the album would become. Guitarist Stone Gossard later told Richard Kingsmill that the success of the record made the band uncomfortable. “Everyone felt a little bit undeserving of the sales and the attention we were getting,” he told Kingsmill in 1997.
The many highlights of Golden Plains 2019
This year's line-up gives Golden Plains the grit and groove it needs "I’m so happy to be here! This is graceful, man!" South London MC Flohio said the first words I heard from the Golden Plains festival stage as I finished pitching the tent and finally cracked a tinny. They were words delivered with wonder, honesty and true humility, a sentiment expressed by so many local and International artists playing at Golden Plains in 2019.

Seasons of Love, by Dave Bradley
Seasons of Love Raking through my memories as the leaves begin to fall The cold of winter's coming, there's no hope for spring at all The plans I made for summer come tumbling down to earth But see salvation rising through the light of just one birth Oh Lord, You find us sinful, lost, and proud But with your Word, You guide us We sing Your praise with voices loud The plan You made forever is only now revealed At this time of year, You come to us and all our wounds are healed Making safe our...

The Silent Spring (ft. Emmazen), by Dave Bradley
The Silent Spring They tell us history is a lesson to learn Too many times we ignore it They say the danger is a stranger to burn Through the seasons they implore it It doesn't matter how near or how far The border lands we deplore them They feed us lies that just won't settle the score Fail to see that we abhor them Across the desert a healing wind blows Now the promise of a silent spring Though lines were drawn and the borders were closed Above the cloud the eagle spreads her wings Above...
