Projected environmental change relevant to whaling activities in Utqiaġvik, Alaska
The Arctic 3 days ago Stochastic cloud fluctuations drive Arctic winter radiative bistability Science magazine - www.science.org • 3d Arctic near-surface temperatures are rising at nearly four times the global mean rate (1, 2). This amplification peaks in winter (3, 4), when the … Weather Map Shows Where Snow Returns Early Next Week Men's Journal - Jenny Lynton • 7d Snow is back in the forecast Monday through Wednesday, with highs dropping to around 30 degrees in the coldest spots.
Projected environmental change relevant to whaling activities in Utqiaġvik, Alaska
Abstract The Arctic has experienced rapid change which is projected to continue through the 21st century. These environmental changes may impact traditional subsistence hunting activities including bowhead whale hunting. Here, we present the long term sea ice and wind changes over the 20th and 21st century for Utqiaġvik, Alaska that could impact spring and autumn whaling activities.
Expanded Understanding of the Western Antarctic Peninsula Sea‐Ice Environment Through Local and Regional Observations at Palmer Station
1 Introduction Sea ice around the continent of Antarctica plays an important role in the coastal marine ecosystem, as well as in the magnitude and variability of the Southern Ocean carbon sink (Death et al., 2014; Rintoul, 2018). The Southern Ocean hosts spatially variable and predominantly seasonal sea ice, with very little surviving through each summer to become multi-year ice.
Response of Onshore Oceanic Heat Supply to Yearly Changes in the Amundsen Sea Icescape (Antarctica)
1 Introduction The floating portion of the Antarctic ice sheet, the ice shelves, exhibit some of their highest melting rates in the Amundsen Sea (Rignot et al., 2019) and have the potential to contribute to global sea level rise substantially over the next century (e.g., Joughin et al., 2021).
Pathways and supply of dissolved iron in the Amundsen Sea (Antarctica)
Numerous coastal polynyas fringe the Antarctic continent and strongly influence the productivity of Antarctic shelf systems. Of the 46 Antarctic coastal polynyas documented in a recent study, the Amundsen Sea Polynya (ASP) stands out as having the highest net primary production per unit area. Incubation experiments suggest that this productivity is partly controlled by the availability of dissolved iron (dFe).
