Protest and the Muse
“So there I stood in front of the pub in my Russian fur hat, while all the people who had been in Wenceslas Square streamed past me, shouting and carrying placards….
Why Protest?
The second decade of this millennium will be remembered as a decade of protest. In early 2011, the Arab Spring surprised the world – as well as the autocrats that these movements targeted. Toward mid-decade, massive demonstrations took place in Brazil, Turkey, Ukraine, and Hong Kong. On January 21, 2017, the largest number of demonstrators ever – five million of them – massed on the streets of American cities for the Women’s March.
Analysis | Americans just set a turnout record for the midterms, voting at the highest rate since 1914. This explains why.
A voter casts a ballot at the Hamilton County Board of Elections on Oct. 10, the first day of early voting in Cincinnati. (John Minchillo/AP) This November’s elections set a voter turnout record: 49 percent of the voter-eligible population showed up at the polls, the highest midterm turnout seen since 1914. Why? Germany’s strong economy didn’t help Angela Merkel at the polls. This is why.
Before Germany’s Sept. 24 federal election, observers often commented that its economy was “firing on all cylinders.” GDP growth will likely exceed 2 percent in 2017, the strongest rate in half a decade. Unemployment levels are at their lowest since German unification in 1990.
People who protest almost certainly vote
Protests against President Trump and his executive actions have been erupting across the country. As they began, immediately after the Jan. 22 women’s marches, Trump tweeted: The tweet implied that people who protest do not vote. Research suggests that the opposite is true: People who protest are no less likely to vote than non-protesters. If anything, protesters vote at higher rates.
Trump supporters vastly overestimate unemployment - and they blame politicians for it
It is by now clear that Donald Trump strikes a chord among many Americans who feel marginalized by free trade and left behind in the post-Great Recession recovery. Our research has uncovered that Trump supporters who are struggling economically perceive U.S. economic performance overall to be much worse than it actually is. And their perceptions are more dire than those who, though also struggling economically, support Hillary Clinton. Here’s how we studied this.
Donald Trump’s message of fear may mobilize Americans to vote (but not necessarily for him)
Donald Trump delivered a dark speech at the finale of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, redolent of the dangers facing Americans, presumably from terrorists, immigrants and lawless citizens. Trump seemed to reject the conventional political wisdom, embodied in Ronald Reagan’s “Morning in America” theme in 1984 and Barack Obama’s “Yes, We Can” slogan in 2008, that presidential candidates should offer voters a sense of hope.
