4.4 Re-Evaluation of the “OAE” The concept of the OAE was based upon the stratigraphic manifestation of organic matter-rich sediments from epeiric, epicontinental, and open-ocean locations (see Schlanger & Jenkyns, 1976). These new estimates paired with global redox data suggest that OC burial and reducing conditions in the global ocean likely persisted well before and after the classically defined OAE.
