Beginning in 1996, S2 Associates Inc., based in Napa, California, has established itself as a specialized environmental and exhibition design firm. Initially focusing on museum exhibit design, the company expanded its services to include content creation, conceptual and final design phases, production management, and the development of fundraising renderings. A significant development occurred in 1999 when Daniel Wodarcyk joined as a partner, bringing a wealth of experience in museum exhibition planning and design, which enhanced the firm's reach in the cultural and institutional exhibit sector.

At the core of S2 Associates’ philosophy is creating interactive educational experiences. The firm specializes in subjects such as culture, technology, and science, seeking to produce exhibits that actively engage visitors. Collaboration between the S2 team and clients is a key part of the process, blending design expertise with client knowledge to deliver exhibits that leave lasting impressions.

S2’s approach to projects is notably collaborative, a trait evident in their first major project, The Tech Museum of Innovation. Subsequent Liberty Science Center and Nevada Discovery Museum work refined this cooperative spirit. S2 maintains strong relationships with exhibit producers and experts nationally and internationally, allowing the firm to stand out in exhibition design.

Each project typically begins with a workshop involving key stakeholders and specialists, often hosted at S2’s Napa River studio. These workshops facilitate clear communication, goal alignment, and collective problem-solving early in the project. Throughout the exhibit’s development, the firm prioritizes regular communication, which helps ensure the final product meets expectations and stays on schedule and budget.

Project management at S2 is meticulous, clearly focusing on delivering installations on time and within the financial parameters set. This careful oversight supports the creation of exhibits that are both engaging and operationally successful.

Internally, S2 Associates offers comprehensive services, including exhibit master planning, stakeholder coordination, educational objective development, content research, and detailed design work. The firm uses various technical tools for modeling and rendering, such as Vectorworks CAD, AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, and Unreal Engine. Graphic design is handled with Adobe Suite software, while project coordination relies on platforms like Smartsheet and Procore. Additionally, S2 provides prototyping, 3D printing, and physical model construction capabilities.

Among its notable projects, S2 Associates designed the Innovation Gallery at The Tech Museum in San Jose, California. This 8,000-square-foot exhibit introduces visitors to five key areas of innovation—robotics, invention, microprocessing, lasers, and computing—highlighting Silicon Valley’s technological history.

The Nevada Discovery Museum is another significant project. It caters primarily to children between the ages of eight and twelve. Its hands-on exhibits cover Northern Nevada’s history, natural environment, sustainable building, and art.

S2 was responsible for the Skyscraper! Exhibit at Liberty Science Center in New Jersey, the largest permanent exhibition there, spanning 12,800 square feet. It offers insights into the engineering, science, and construction processes behind skyscrapers.

In Pleasanton, California, the firm created “Building Pleasanton” at the Museum on Main, an exhibit exploring the city’s development through different historical periods using artifacts and media.

Additional projects include “Gold, Greed and Speculation” at the Sacramento History Museum, which focuses on Sacramento’s founding and the Gold Rush era. The “Your Story” exhibit at the Hayward Area Historical Society presents local histories using innovative designs, such as oversized books.

S2 also designed an intimate exhibit for V. Sattui Winery in Napa Valley. The exhibit uses stone caves to tell the winery’s story from its origins in the late 1800s through Prohibition and its revival decades later.

The firm has also contributed to several children-focused exhibits, including those at the Clayton Children’s Museum, Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, Liberty Science Center, Hayward Area Historical Society, and Bay Area Discovery Museum, which encourage hands-on learning and curiosity in young visitors.
