1 Introduction Impact events are a universal phenomenon, capable of transferring immense energy at the point of contact, with temperatures up to ∼15,000 K and pressures sometimes exceeding hundreds of GPa (Melosh 1989). Exposure to these extreme conditions is expected to sterilize affected substrates. This effect is largely confined to the immediate impact zone as temperatures and pressures decrease rapidly with distance from the point of impact.
