Archway of 12th-century Qutub mosque restored in Delhi
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has completed conservation work on the archway of the 12th century Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque in the Qutub Minar complex, officials aware of the matter said. Built of red sandstone, buff stone, and grey stone, the archway had eroded significantly since conservation work was last carried out in 1964. The stones were damaged in some parts, and had fallen in others, the officials said. “New stones have been installed and the ceiling has been fixed.

Lieutenant governor VK Saxena on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the conservation and restoration project at the British-era Gole Market, which will be turned into a museum dedicated to the country’s women achievers. The project will be implemented by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). Saxena said that the museum will shine a spotlight on the successful women and their contributions in the fields of literature, culture, social sector, medicine, science and technology.

Delhi’s neglected Roshanara Bagh falls into obscurity
In 1650, Roshanara Begum — a Mughal princess and the daughter of emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal — patronised the construction of a pleasure garden on the outskirts of Shahjahanabad. The bagh, or garden, in Shakti Nagar in north Delhi, also came to house Begum’s tomb after she died in 1671, which is now among a few other historical structures from the period.

The cell is part of the enclosures included within the fortifications. The cell is adjacent to the on-site ASI museum. ASI officials said that workers recreated the dome through an intricate process that involved the demolition of reinforced cement concrete and brickwork.

A 19th-century police chowki in outer Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla, believed to be the oldest surviving police post in the national capital, has been restored nearly one and a half years after conservation efforts started on site. Delhi’s air quality improved to its best levels in 11 months on Sunday, as a strong spell of overnight rain and sparse vehicular traffic due to G20-related restrictions combined to give the national capital unusually low pollution levels. The Capital’s 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) dipped to 45 at 4pm on Sunday, the city’s first “good” air day this year. Pollution levels on Sunday were the lowest since October 10 last year, when Delhi clocked an AQI of just 44.

A new light and sound show is all set to make a mark at the Purana Qila after a gap of threeyears, officials aware of the matter said. Trial runs for the show at the ASI-protected heritage structure have been conducted, and a final run will be carried out before the show opens to visitors, the official said, and added that visitors to the 16th-century fort complex will be able to enjoy the show in at least seven different languages.

A Lodhi-era turret is the latest historical structure in the city to get a facelift ahead of the G20 Summit scheduled to be held in the Capital on September 9 and 10. Located close to gate no.3 of Lodhi Gardens — at the southeast corner of the Bada Gumbad — the turret is among the three small monuments that fall under the jurisdiction of the department of archaeology. The structure last saw repair in 2010, in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games.

A portion of a complex abutting Bada Gumbad mosque within the Lodhi Gardens has sustained damage during the rains this year, prompting conservationists to urge authorities to undertake urgent repairs and pointing out that several parts of the 15th century monument have eroded over time.
