Being Black in a Muslim School: Racism and the Importance of Training for Teachers to Understand Prejudice
In the sixth grade, my community opened a Muslim school, which I attended with my siblings until I graduated. We were one of the founding families and one of the handfuls of black families who attended. The student population was small, with about 75-100 in the first few years, with a large bulk of the students being in the lower elementary. The majority of the students were from the Arabic world, including Palestine, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.
Lessons From Great Women of Our Past: Motherhood Is Not Synonymous With Marriage
This article was first published by SISTER’S Magazine in 2014. The Talents of Aishah (Ra) ‘Aishah bint Abu Bakr (RA) was the best of women. Her excellence is proven by the privileges bestowed upon her by Allah (swt). She was also the only wife who witnessed revelation come to the Prophet (SAW).
“I Am Not Determined by My Ability to Get Pregnant”
I’ve really struggled to write a column for the last 6 months. Every time I sat down to write something, one subject would come to mind, like those irritating pop ups you just can’t close. I’ve finally got to a place where I can write about it, but it’s been a tough journey to get here. A while back we decided we were ready to expand our tiny family unit. It was exciting and nerve-racking but we were ready for the next step in our lives.

There are some women, who in childhood and adulthood fantasized about their future spouse, perfect wedding including dream dress and future children. I was not one of those women. As a Muslim, both marriage and motherhood were lumped together. You could not have one without the other. If you wanted children then you had to get married. And once married, children were the expectation. And I did both, married at 18 and had my first and only child at 29. Both were my choice.

10 Signs of Financial Abuse in a Relationship and What to Do About It
I was a victim of domestic violence and abuse myself from 2000-2013, but you could say that it hasn’t really stopped. Even after the divorce, I am still suffering emotional abuse due to being estranged and alienated from both my family of origin and my three children I had with my ex-husband. In the last five years, I’ve channelled my pain and grief into helping other women understand what is happening to them and giving them the tools they need to work their way through it.
How Muslim Women Can Look Back to Islamic History to Become the Best Version of Their Contemporary Selves
I will always remember the first time I genuinely felt pleased with my great heritage as a Muslim woman. It was upon reading the seerah of the mothers of the believers as well as the female companions of the messenger of Allah (PBUH) in the book “Great Women of Islam”. The knowledge was unshackling.
Why It Is Important to Have Black Muslim Only Spaces: An Interview With Neimo Askar & Ayo Olatunji
Source: Instagram @Neimoaskar “When it comes to black people we ourselves don’t know our worth, but everyone else does and they are threatened by it and try to diminish us, and try to put us down, but once we realise our worth the possibilities are really endless…” On Saturday 23rd June, an event took place in Brixton Pound Cafe, a ‘Blackout’ Eid party was held by Neimo Askar, Fahima Hersi, Ajan Abdullahi, Idil Abdullahi and Najib Ahmed.
