The best way to win the war for talent? Forget about…
As Jane Gratton, head of people policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, reacting to recent ONS figures said, ‘There are still a huge number of vacancies… and this is stopping firms in their tracks. It means they are struggling to meet the orders on their books, and it puts any plans for growth far out of reach’. The shortage is particularly severe in some sectors including engineering, hospitality and healthcare.
A new era for volunteering
Some of the most important jobs in society are done by unpaid workers. In the UK, Special Constables, Magistrates and Samaritans are all demanding volunteer roles that rely on people with the right kind of talent to do them well. The challenge is that some of the people who are drawn to these kinds of jobs are the types of people who are unsuited to them.
Technology as a window on hidden talent
If it wasn’t for technology, we wouldn’t have been able to make the switch to working from home. Years of endless discussions about the pros and cons of flexible working, delaying, fear of loss of productivity and the ‘we’ve always done it this way’ mentality was swept away in a flash, argues Sally Bibb. Now comes the debate about if, when and how much to go back to the office. A regular concern raised about remote working is how much is lost through the lack of ‘water cooler’ moments.
Don’t bother working on weaknesses. Success lies in playing to strengths
It might seem like common sense, but the way to world-class performance is to understand and play to your strengths. As Peter Drucker, author and management consultant put it “A person can perform only from strength. One cannot build performance from weakness, let alone from something one cannot do at all”. So, why do we persistently overlook this in business and continue to focus on how we can improve on our weaknesses? And what can leaders do now to flip their approach.

The simple question that reveals so much | Sally Bibb blog
This morning I was in one of my favourite coffee shops. The owner has just come back from the Caribbean. He’d been invited to go to a Michelin star restaurant that wanted to improve their coffee making standards. They had asked him to teach staff how to make great coffee. There were seventy in the group, so he realised he couldn’t possibly teach them all in a week. He knew he needed to spot the really great ones – the people who would be able to help him teach the others. I asked him how he did that.
Management f-Laws (Ackhoff, Addison, Bibb) | sallybibb.com
The book was the brainchild of the late Russ Ackoff. Russ hated to be called a guru but he was up there in the same league of Peter Drucker and the other great management thinkers. He was Professor Emeritus of the Wharton School, he wrote many books on Management Systems and is high in the list of the World’s Top Business Brains. The intention behind the book is to reveal some truisms about management and organisations in a fun but insightful way.
