1 Introduction Globally, wetlands are declining at an alarming rate. The recent global wetlands outlook estimates that, since 1970, approximately 22% of the global total has been lost with an annual decline of 0.52% (Robertson et al. 2025). Floodplain wetlands are vulnerable to climate change (Burkett and Kusler 2000; Erwin 2009), land-use change (Sica et al. 2016; Tibby et al. 2019), invasive species (Vilizzi et al. 2014; Lishawa et al. 2019) and increased agricultural production.
