The IMF can be sued if they ruin local livelihoods
The United States Supreme Court has ruled that the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank can be sued in cases where their activities have caused harm to local communities. The 7-1 ruling that was delivered in 2019, stemmed from a case that was filed by a group of farmers in India who alleged that a power-plant built through financing from the International Finance Corporation (the private sector arm of the World Bank) had disrupted and harmed their livelihoods.

Media houses must boost work conditions for freelancers
The legacy media landscape in Kenya features an interesting industry anomaly in that 70 per cent of the published content is produced by freelance journalists. These are journalists who are not employed by the media houses they serve but are paid depending on the content they submit and is published. This arrangement presents professional, ethical and human rights challenges and pitfalls. Yet the media plays a key role in the defence of democracy, human rights and human dignity.
Review requirement for PhD, master’s students to publish
The Commission for University Education requires master’s students to publish one article in a refereed journal before they can graduate—ditto for PhD students, who must publish two. It is time to abolish that requirement. First, while the requirement was well-intentioned and hoped to nurture a culture of research excellence and rigorous scholarship, it has had several unintended consequences.

And so, hundreds of Kenyans will soon have an opportunity to start a new life in the United States. But before your pack your bags and emigrate, there are a few things you need to know for a successful relocation. It is high time we devolved diaspora policy to counties
The Kenya Diaspora Policy was established to create a framework for mainstreaming this demographic of the Kenyan population in the national development agenda. First, urgently establish diaspora desks in the counties.

Why Kenyans in diaspora are the Third Force in national politics
In the article on Sunday, August 28, on the rise of the Third Force in Kenyan politics, the writer ignored the potent power of the Kenyan diaspora. While Kenya has 47 legally recognised counties, the diaspora represents the 48th county. Indeed, the diaspora is Kenya’s best-educated and richest county which last year sent home more than $1.5 billion (Sh150 billion) in remittances. For many years, the Kenyan Government simply treated the diaspora population as a source of foreign currency.
