How whales and dolphins can teach us to be less stupid

For those tens of millions of us who have been watching the extraordinary ‘Blue Planet II’, the final programme in the series (which looked at the human-caused threats facing the seas) may have come as both a wake-up call and a disappointment. Disappointment, at what we’ve done to this beautiful planet. And perhaps also, disappointment that the BBC didn’t look deeply enough into why these harms have happened.
Big Brother Is Coming Closer
The issue of mass surveillance is a growing worry; its future undetermined and its current state often unknown. In the UK, the government’s increasing reliance on big data and video surveillance has sparked growing concern for the privacy of the general public. In London, it has been estimated that there is one CCTV camera for every 14 people.
Premium Friday: Tackling Overwork in Japan
John Maynard Keynes, the renowned economist, once predicted in 1930 that the next generation would be working a mere 15 hours a week. Fast forward to 2017, however, and the topic of excessive working hours remains alive in our discourse, from in the media to economists and co-workers alike. Yet in Japan, the issue of overwork and its impact on health has been largely repressed by society, accepted as part of a cultural norm.
“We need a British Islam”: Former EDL Leader Tommy Robinson Talks to The Beaver
Whilst writing this article, I had to balance two very difficult concerns. On the one hand I do not simply want to produce an attack article. This takes no skill, and would not be a fair reflection of the man I met in Luton. The tabloid press have done a good enough job of this already for Tommy, often on the very same pages that they print damaging stereotypes of British Muslims of their own.
In Conversation with David Blunkett: ISIS, Education and Social Care
David Blunkett, prominent backbench Labour MP and former Education and Home secretary, is standing down at the 2015 elections after nearly thirty years in the Commons. I talked to him about what he felt the future of education and social care would look like, as well as how he felt the threat of IS needed to be dealt with. We started off with discussing his proposals to reform the funding of old age social care through greater reliance on capital from the property of those receiving care.
