M-1 :: Confidential
Dead Prez, the duo M-1 and Stic.man, has tried to foster as uncomfortable a relationship as possible with suburban hip-hop fans. Though they made a valiant effort with their at times downright racist rhetoric, quality won out. “Let’s Get Free,” their 2000 LP, was just too good. It’s true, they couldn’t get play on the radio, and I’m sure many a soccermom was turned-off by the anti-white diatribes that the album was laced with, but the music was just too good.

Edgar Allen Floe :: Floe Almighty
His name itself, Edgar Allen Floe, is a challenge. First, a five-syllable moniker is a statement unto itself. It calls attention to its wearer, begging for confrontation. “Yes, I am this big, motherfucker.” Even if you cut it down to size, to the snappier E.A. Floe, there still remains an unavoidable face-off. Floe is demanding comparison against the loftiest of literary strata.
El Da Sensei :: The Unusual
I grin every time I think about how old I was when some of the harder hitting MC’s put out their first records. I was four when Dr. Dre was splitting wax, eight when Biggie laid down “Ready to Die”, a month later, Snoop released “Doggystyle”.
JD Walker :: Them Get You… Them Got You
Will anyone listen to it? A few more artists should be seriously asking themselves that silly seeming question, especially these days, when anything seems to go in the rapidly transforming realm of hip-hop. I hate to be one of those sticklers, one of those back row assholes that yell, “Where’s the beat?” just when everyone else is feeling it, but I can’t help it.
Malkovich Music :: Skeletons
Coming back from visiting family in an old age home in Florida, I wasn’t much in the mood for “Skeletons”, Malkovich Music’s debut album. I’d passed enough bent white-haired people that looked enough like the x-rayed skull on the cover to swear me off of death for another fifty years at least. But duty calls, and I put my fears of mortality aside and turned up the volume.
Mike Ladd :: Father Divine
Mike Ladd pisses me off. There is an attitude that some artists take, in their music and in their nauseatingly earnest interviews, that they and they alone, are doing it all different; miraculously breaking new ground. In a BBC interview Ladd gave last year, he makes the breadth of his music clear. “My work chronicles a timeline leading up to the point we’ve reached now, which is post-futurism.” So wait, your work is all of time? Wrapped up in album form? Bad-ass.
Code Red :: All Aboard
The underground is exploding and everyone’s scrambling to get on board. Each release is straining to be more independent, more experimental, and more straight-out weird than the one before. You got away with a chorus that was just a screeching wail? That’s cool and all, but what about the six verses I devoted to the psychosomatic quivers in the back of my mind?
