Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job was in 2003, when I was placed on Anime Dream's news beat. It was there that I cut my teeth, and began my career in earnest.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I always tell people - "unleash your brainworms." Basically, focus on what YOU find interesting first, not what you think people will enjoy.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use Google Docs for writing and editing, Trello for scheduling and planning, and a combination of Publer, and Deck.Blue for social posts.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Generally, I don't have a "best time." We have a team of editors and we evaluate new pitches roughly once every 4-6 weeks.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
The most common misconception is that it's an easy beat. Anime industry and fandom journalism is a rich field, with many opportunities to really delve into the history of the medium, or the intricacies of a work or creator. The industry as we know it has existed since the 1980s, meaning that there is more than 40 years of history to draw from at this point, and a lot of genuinely fascinating stories to tell.
