By Samantha Wright In honor of Michael V. Kiefer, the City of Long Beach Department of Parks and Recreation held the Kiefer Swim, Paddle, Run at Riverside Boulevard Beach on July 27. Kiefer was a Long Beach lifeguard and was one of the many New York City firefighters that sacrificed their lives in an attempt to rescue others on Sept. 11, 2001. He served with Ladder Company 132 at a fire station in Brooklyn.

LONDON (ICIS)--European glycerine spot prices faced triple digit increases this week as availability tightened significantly, with players concerned that upstream biodiesel production will fall further through the second quarter. Refined vegetable glycerine prices shot up €130/tonne on the low end and €230/tonne on the high end to €670-900/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe).

LONDON (ICIS)--The global biodiesel market has seen several changes in anti-dumping duties (ADDs) around the world this year, mainly concerning Argentinian and Indonesian biodiesel. After Argentina’s successful complaint to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the EU’s executive body, the European Commission, was told to lower existing ADDs against Argentinian biodiesel. From 20 September 2017, the ADDs were lowered from the original 22.0-25.7% to 4.5-8.1%.

BRUSSELS (ICIS)--Industry sources showed on Tuesday mixed feelings about the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED) II proposals which would exclude crop- and feed-based biofuels from biofuel mandates from 2021. As well as excluding crop and feed based biofuels, the RED II proposals would drop the EU's biofuel mandate from 10% in 2020 to 1.5% in 2021, increasing to 6.8% by 2030.
UK to ban combustion engines by 2040, follows other European countries
LONDON (ICIS)--The UK government is set to announce a ban on all new diesel and petrol vehicles from 2040, environment secretary Michael Gove said on Wednesday. The ban is part of a government plan to reduce air pollution. The move follows a similar announcement made recently by France’s environment minister Nicolas Hulot, in which he said that France plans to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040.
