Mobsters and the Mona Lisa: What Does Da Vinci's Painting Add to a 1960s Yakuza Film?
Each month In The Frame explores the role that art plays on the big screen. From classic noir thrillers to iconic television series, directors have turned to art history and contemporary artists alike to bring their vision to life. This time, it’s the Mona Lisa in Masahiro Shinoda’s Pale Flower (1964), an overlooked gem of the Japanese New Wave No artwork has been reproduced, manipulated, commodified and meme-ified as much as the Mona Lisa.
Sub-zero city: explore the harshness and beauty of arctic Russia in this short film
An elderly Russian gentleman in swimming trunks and flip-flops hangs his towel on a railing and swims out into a grey, urban lake. In the background are snow-capped hills and industrial chimneys spouting smoke. This is Oleg, and he captures as well as anyone the contradictions that govern life in the Arctic city of Norilsk. “I’m proud of having taken part in building this city. Although, roughly speaking, people here are sacrificing their health.
Power, Poussin and Penises: Why Does Fassbinder Put Midas And Bacchus on Film?
Fassbinder, who befriended the older director, said of his mentor’s works: “What passes on the screen isn’t something that I can directly identify with from my own life, because it’s so pure, so unreal. And yet within me, together with my own reality, it becomes a new reality.” What Sirk and Fassbinder shared was an understanding of the subversive potential of melodrama. A paradoxical genre, melodrama deals simultaneously in repressed emotions and passionate outbursts.
Snow ghosts: haunting images of derelict socialist infrastructure
Danila Tkachenko is a Russian photographer whose series Restricted Areas crystallises the tendencies of many artists working on themes of the post-Soviet space. As Calvert 22’s Power and Architecture season demonstrates, there is a healthy interest in the abandoned or neglected buildings that once served as landmarks of Soviet ambition: the rack and ruin of utopia. What sets Tkachenko apart is the unforgiving simplicity of his compositions.

Hermetic Topography, by Zebularin
After tapes on Steep Gloss and Cruel Nature, we are happy that Stuttgart-based collective Zebularin join the OM family with their new release “Hermetic Topography“. The album, a product of weekly recording sessions between March and July 2020, just when the pandemic slowed a bit down, might be the closest approach to what communal experiences sounded throughout 2020. It‘s a bold design of how collective improvisation can work in the post-covid era.

The Memeification of Rodchenko’s Iconic Soviet Portrait
This untitled portrait of the writer and socialist socialite Lilya Brik, taken in 1924 by Aleksandr Rodchenko, may well seem familiar, even if you have no interest in early Soviet art or politics. In part that’s because it’s simply a powerful image, a strikingly simple composition, with boldly legible emotions lent extra dynamism by the tilted perspective and low angle so typical of the artist’s photography.

Continue, by Richard Chartier
With his new album “Continue” Richard Chartier presents four minimalist compositions with a focus on deep drones and apparent silences. The music is subtle, delicate and at moments fragile. Full, with details, like delicate patterns that unfold like ripples on water. With a keen eye on details the compositions reflect Chartier’s earlier work, but also asks new questions. When is the creative process done? Is art ever finished or does it continue to develop?
