Home playoff game implication at play between Dadeville, Lanett
This Friday’s game between Dadeville and Lannet has the opportunity to shake up the Class 2A Region 4 standings as a whole. Reeltown is out to an early lead, holding a 4-0 region record that puts them in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 seed. But the gap isn't much; Lanett is the other undefeated Region 4 team in the standings, with wins over Horseshoe Bend, Ranburne, Randolph County, and B.B. Rangers look to keep offensive surge rolling against Sparta
It's not crazy to say the Ranger Raid offense the Southern Prep football team has adopted has found its stride. Last week against Crenshaw Christian, the Rangers put up a season-high in points with a 39-10 win — toppling the previous mark of 34 points against Valiant Cross in Week 1. In the best way possible, everything was clicking for the Rangers, piling up 388 total yards of offense against the Cougars.

Rangers face tall task against No. 4 Lowndes Academy
The Southern Prep football team was on the cusp of coming away with its second win of the season with a low-scoring affair against Edgewood Academy last week, falling 12-8. However, the Rangers have no time to waste with another tough matchup in the midst of the No. 4 team in AISA, Lowndes Academy, this Friday. kAmkDA2?mt?C:BF6 qFC56EE6 8@E 9:D 7:CDE 7F== DE2CE 2E E96 BF2CE6C324< A@D:E:@? 7@C $@FE96C? !C6A[ 7:?:D9:?8 E96 ?:89E 8@:?8 `b 7@C ag[ E9C@H:?8 a`_ A2DD:?8 J2C5D H:E9 @?6 E@F495@H?
Rangers pull away with first win over Valiant Cross
After the season opener the Southern Prep football team had against Autauga Academy, it was back to the drawing board. And safe to say it worked, with the Rangers pulling away with a 34-22 win over Valiant Cross to open the AISA-AA Region 1 season. Southern Prep coach J.R. Rodriguez noted some key contributors moving around the field to provide the best match up possible for his team; one of the keys being moving quarterback Brayden Pace to defensive back.
Tigers cross state line for Week 1
The year was 1999, Phillip Baker was entering his 12th season as the head football coach at Dadeville. Spongebob Squarepants made its debut on television, while the masses flocked to the local theater to watch Star Wars: The Phantom Menace after a 16-year hiatus for the franchise. It was also the last time the Dadeville football team crossed the Alabama-Georgia state lines to play a football game. At least, that’s until this Friday. kAmkDA2?mp F?:BF6 EH62< E@ E96 %:86CD’ D4965F=6 C6DF=E65 :?
Experienced Tigers enter new region test
Weirdly, with how many new forces insert themselves into the mix for the Dadeville Tigers, there is some real excitement surrounding the team. As it has been said throughout the offseason, the Tigers join a new classification and with that a new region. Last year, Dadeville finished 3-8 for the second consecutive season, ousted in the playoffs in the first round. However, this year looks to be the one to turn the tide entering year three under Chad McKelvey.
Baker places ninth in state for decathlon
A decathlon is a two-day track and field event in which an athlete competes in 10 events, ranging from sprints and distance to jumps and throws. Finding someone who specializes in so many events is like finding a needle in a haystack. However, the Dadeville track and field team seemingly found theirs with Philip Baker. kAmkDA2?m~? %F6D52J[ q2<6C 4@>A6E65 :? E96 pw$pp s642E9=@?
Dadeville’s Arielle Russell earns 3A state title in long jump
If you were to ask Dadeville track and field coach Michael Taylor, who’s the best all-around athlete, male or female, at Dadeville High School? He knows his answer immediately would go to Arielle Russell. Russell has her hands in just about everything with the Tigers, whether it be as a standout basketball player or her role on the track team — she’s successful.
One game away: Dadeville's historic season ends in area tournament
Just one game away from the Class 3A Regional Tournament — that was the fate of the Dadeville softball team on Tuesday. After posting an impressive resume, going 7-2 in Class 3A Area 6 play, the Tigers snatched homefield advantage for the area tournament for the first time in 16 years.
Player of the Week: Wood does a little bit of everything in playoff sweep
What did Reed Wood not do for the Reeltown baseball team in the first round? He doubled twice, he homered; heck, through two innings, he pitched a no-hitter and sent five of six batters faced to the dugout. Through five combined innings in the Rebels' 2-0 series sweep, Wood made his mark and for that, he is the Outlook Player of the Week. kAmkDA2?m“}@]`[ #665 :D 2? 6I46AE:@?2=[ 6I46AE:@?2= 9F>2? 36:?8[” #66=E@H?
SECOND ROUND READY: Benjamin Russell, Reeltown gear up for road series in playoffs
The road to the blue map continues and the pool narrows, meaning some of the best baseball teams in the state are making their case to advance. The Benjamin Russell baseball team is no different. After a stellar opening series against Brookwood, the Wildcats advance to the second round to face off against ranked Spain Park (29-7). In the final Alabama Sports Writers Association rankings, Spain Park was named the No. 2 team in Class 6A — just behind Homewood, which is slated at No. 1.
Turner signs to cheer at next level
Cheering at the college level was always in the cards for Benjamin Russell senior Alli Turner, and now it has become a reality. “I knew whenever I was in middle school,” Turner said, referring to the possibility of cheering in college. “It was really fun and enjoyable. Strong defense, tons of hits carry Benjamin Russell to first round victory
Thirteen innings, one run scored and nine total hits — that was the stat line for Brookwood in the first round. On the other side, again 13 innings played; 16 runs scored and 21 total hits — that was the statline for Benjamin Russell’s baseball team in the first round. The Wildcats took home a 2-0 series sweep over the Panthers in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs, winning Game 1, 10-0 and Game 2, 6-1.
Six different goal scorers for Wildcats in playoff win

BRHS anglers close lead, prepare for state championship
Sports are always more fun when you have a rival to look forward to seeing. In years past, Briarwood Christian has, in essence, held that distinction for the Benjamin Russell fishing team. This year, however, Vestavia Hills has been the team Benjamin Russell has its eye on. Separated by only two points in the grand standings, thanks to a first-place finish on Logan Martin for the Wildcats, Vestavia Hills holds a narrow lead heading into the final tournament of this season, held at Lake Pickwick.
Holtville Bulldogs impress in Strike Out Cancer tournament
Two ranked teams in their respective classification and a reigning state champ — that was the slate for the Holtville softball team this weekend at the Benjamin Russell Strike Out Cancer Tournament. Ultimately, even with a loaded slate and four games over two days, the Bulldogs walked out with a 3-1 record. They beat Benjamin Russell, 8-5, Horseshoe Bend, 4-1, and Moody, 8-4 and fell 10-5 to Dadeville on Friday.
Bittersweet moment: BRHS softball plays final game before renovations
Benjamin Russell softball coaches Jessica Johnson and Amanda Bryant were part of the first Wildcats softball team to play on the field located at the Charles E. Bailey Sr. Sportplex. Although the Wildcats aren’t venturing away from the Pam Robinson Field, things are going to look a lot different in 2027. As a part of the renovation set for both the softball and baseball fields for the Wildcats, the Pam Robinosn Field is to be fully turfed.
Horseshoe Bend battles through busy slate, eyes bigger stage
It was not a bad weekend by any stretch of the imagination, but it sure was a long one for the Horseshoe Bend softball team. Over the course of two days, the Generals got their work cut out for them with four games in just shy of 24 hours. They finished 2-2 over the weekend, picking up a 9-2 win over Oakman and another 4-3 win over Beauregard to cap off Day 1.
Player of the Week: Consistency sets Lumpkin apart for Benjamin Russell
Of everyone on the Benjamin Russell baseball team, at the plate, the fate of the universe on the line, the Martians have the death beam pointed at Earth, you better hit it — give coach Richy Brooks junior Charlie Lumpkin. ‘10 years too late’ - Area coaches speak on shot clock implementation
The days of teams holding the ball for minutes on end have come to an end in Alabama. On Wednesday, the Alabama High School Athletic Association Central Board of Control, in its April CBOC meeting, voted to approve the mandate of a 35-second shot clock for the 2026-2027 basketball season. And if you were to ask some of the local coaches in the area, it was something they have been waiting for.
Prepping for playoffs: Area teams gear up for long road ahead
After defeating Calera, the Benjamin Russell baseball team secured homefield advantage for the first round of the Class 6A baseball playoffs. And early on, coach Ricky Brooks knows it's going to be a tough match up against Brookwood (18-13). “I expect a good baseball team,” Brooks said. “They played (against) good baseball teams, they are 18-13 overall. Their No. 1 pitcher is committed to Shelton State, which is a really good junior college, one with the top junior colleges in the state.
History in the circle: Alford becomes No. 75 to reach 600 Ks
In the history of Alabama high school softball, 74 student-athletes have thrown 600 or more strikeouts in their career. On Saturday, the 75th etched her name in the history books. During Horseshoe Bend junior Brynlee Alford’s three innings in the circle against Moody, she picked up the 600th career strikeout in her high school career. This comes just over a month later, after Alford notched the 500th of her career during the early stretch of this season.
AREA CHAMPS: Benjamin Russell ride strong defense to area championship
The Class 6A Area 5 championship returned right back to where it belonged, safely arriving in Alexander City at Brooks-Jordan Field on Thursday. Riding the 3-0 momentum from the series win over Chilton County, all the Benjamin Russell baseball team needed to do was beat Calera to clinch the area — along with home-field advantage in the first round. Benjamin Russell checked both of those boxes on Thursday, winning 4-2, riding the continued momentum from pitcher Luke Knight.
Morgan makes his impact felt at A-Day
Spring practice for college football teams is in full swing across the country, and typically it's capped off with an annual spring game event. That was the case in Tuscaloosa with Alabama completing its scrimmage, better known as A-Day. For most Crimson Tide faithful, their eyes were on the quarterback position with redshirt-freshman Keelon Russell and sophomore Austin Mack duking it out for the QB1 spot this fall.
Player of the Week: Double-digit Ks for Luke Knight in area game
Given the way Luke Knight prepares, it’s not surprising he’s been dubbed Benjamin Russell’s ace on the mound. According to BRHS coach Richy Brooks, his star pitcher is a perfectionist. And heading into each game he’s called upon to play, he makes sure his preparation sets him apart. Against Chilton County last Thursday, it certainly did. Knight manned the mound for all seven innings, recorded 11 strikeouts and surrendered four hits — three of which came in the second inning.
Holtville showcases adaptability, defense against Generals
When Holtville softball coach Reese Claybrook scheduled his alma mater for the upcoming softball season, he knew what he was getting himself into. A graduate of Horseshoe Bend and friend of Generals coach Hagen Whiteard, Claybrook had a decent understanding of what the Horseshoe Bend softball team was made up of. But there was one person in particular he was interested to see how his team reacted to, and that was pitcher Brynlee Alford. kAmkDA2?mp=7@C5 :D 2 {@F:D:2?2\|@?C@6 4@>>:E 2?5 H@?
Wildcats outlast Volunteers in non-area contest
There are no style points in sports; all that matters is whether you win or lose. For the Benjamin Russell softball team, it’s been doing a lot of winning as of late. And it ultimately could not come at a better time as both the area tournament and postseason knock on the door. In the last seven games, the Wildcats have come out on top of six of them — including a 15-13 win over Clay Central on Monday.
Built for road ahead: Horseshoe Bend tests itself against Holtville
The postseason is nearing, and at this stage, teams across the state are trying to simulate the level of competition they will see there. Whether it be area games to push a team into the postseason or games against a team of a higher classification, those games can only speed up the process. The Horseshoe Bend softball team took that to heart, matching up with Holtville on Thursday night, a team three classifications higher. However, it was the Bulldogs who prevailed in the non-area contest, 6-2.
BREAKING: State champ coach tabbed to be Horseshoe Bend’s next
Just a short time since former Horseshoe Bend football coach Jeremy Phillips resigned, the Generals have found a new man to lead the team — former Beauregard and Wadley coach Shenan Motley. According to Tallapoosa County Schools superintendent Casey Davis. Motley has been a head football coach in Alabama for the last nine years, and his most notable stint was at Wadley.
Offensive firepower fuels Generals past Cougars
If there was one thing the Horseshoe Bend baseball team does not have to worry about, it’s the offensive production. However, there are still a few things to clean up on the defensive side of things as the playoffs approach. The Generals had to defend their home turf on Tuesday, facing off against Class 2A Area 8 baseball opponent Central Coosa for the first area game of the season. And it took all of five innings to take home a 19-9 win over the Cougars, kicking off a 1-0 start in area play.
Player of the Week: Moss shows consistency at plate
According to Horseshoe Bend softball coach Hagen Whiteard, Lily Moss is not one of those loud eccentric leaders on the field. But where she thrives is leading with the plays made on the field in crucial moments. There was no better instance of it than on Saturday against Reeltown. Having already recorded a hit in the bottom of the fourth to bring in a score, Moss got one more opportunity to seal the Generals' fate in the bottom of the fifth while facing a three-run deficit and bases loaded.
A swing, a shift, a walk-off slam: Moss’ walk-off homer headlines county clash
You could almost feel what was about to happen when Lily Moss stood in the batter’s box on Saturday. The sun was covered, the wind shifted in the right direction — and the pitch went right where she wanted it. Facing a 2-1 count, with the bases loaded, Moss connected with the ball and for a split-second, time seemed to slow down. The ball lifted into the air; going, going, gone to left field. kAmkDA2?myFDE =:<6 E96 >@>6?ED 2?J 2E9=6E6 6?G:D:@?D H96?

Horseshoe Bend has found its stride
To cut to the chase, the Horseshoe Bend softball team is winning — and doing so dominantly. Currently, the Generals are on a nine-game win streak, which is already impressive enough. However, it goes up a degree when you realize they’ve outscored their opponents 95-to-10 through that stretch. All of that has culminated in the Generals debuting as the No. 10 team in Class 2A in the most recent Alabama Sports Writers Association softball rankings.
Wildcats battled tested before area play
It’s hard to simulate the playoffs when going through the regular-season slate. Hence why coaches across the state pick a matchup to compare to what they might face when the postseason arrives. Benjamin Russell baseball coach Richy Brooks knows that better than anyone, which is why he put Opelika on the schedule this year. kAmkDA2?m#:5:?8 2 D:I\82>6 H:? The high pedigree of Alabama High School basketball talent is finding itself nestled in Alexander City as of late. This week, the AHSAA announced the rosters for the annual North-South All-Star game with two familiar faces from Benjamin Russell making the cut: junior Amari Cunningham and boys basketball coach Jeremy Freeman. Cunningham, who was named first-team All-Outlook, is now regarded as one of the top rising seniors in the state of Alabama.
Confidence growing as BRHS takes area opener
There is always a certain vibe to area play. The stakes get higher, each play feels a little more monumental and above all else, there is a little chippiness to it all. All of which was apparent in the Benjamin Russell softball team’s Class 6A Area 5 opener against Calera. Montgomery homer propels Wildcats to rivalry win
Despite either campus being separated by 17 miles and about 20 minutes down Highway 280, the Benjamin Russell softball team has not played against Dadeville in the past five years. Just by proximity, many of the girls know each other and possibly even played with one another through the travel ball circuit. Volleyball returns to CACC
Volleyball is a staple in the Alabama landscape; from travel teams to recreation, all the way up until high school, there are opportunities to play the game. And on Monday, one more opportunity opened its doors in the state.
Player of the Year: Morris flourishes for the Rangers in all facets
Imagine having to guard a 6-foot-7 and 220-pound basketball player, all with the skillset of a point guard — good luck. That was the fate of anyone matched up against Southern Prep’s Mason Morris this season. For the Rangers, he averaged 26.5 points per game, alongside 13 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. All the while leading the team to a 16-9 record and reaching the AISA playoffs. And for his efforts this year, he is the 2026 Outlook Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
Coach of the Year: Bell reaches Sweet 16 for third consecutive year
Seemingly, Central Coosa boys basketball coach Richard Bell has found himself in a constant cycle of rinse and repeat. In 2024, Bell and his squad made it to the Sweet 16. Heading into 2025, he lost some valuable pieces, but still reached the Sweet 16 with two eighth graders seeing a bulk of the minutes. And if you’ve noticed a trend, he lost some more pieces yet still made it to the Sweet 16 for the third year in a row. kAm%9:D D62D@?[ r6?EC2= r@@D2 7:?:D965 H:E9 2 `d\`_ C64@C5[ 8@:?8 F?56762E65 :?
