Investigating hidden influences on treatment for gastrointestinal stromal tumours with AI: diet, chronic conditions, and mental health - Authors' reply - The Lancet Oncology
We thank Hanjun Ma and colleagues for their interest in our Article 1 and their detailed feedback. Ma and colleagues suggest that dietary differences between the Spanish and Polish cohorts might influence the 5-year recurrence-free survival rates and could affect imatinib absorption and efficacy. However, the patients in these cohorts did not receive imatinib, as they received treatment in the pre-imatinib era (ie, before 2001), as stated in our Article.

PREVENTING MISGENDERING IN CANADIAN COURTS
Abstract Trans people face significant access to justice barriers and regularly experience discrimination within the Canadian legal system. In this context, respectful forms of address directives seek to prevent the misgendering of courtroom participants by having lawyers and parties proactively identify their titles and pronouns. Multiple Canadian courts have now introduced such directives.
A Note on the Social Ecology of Capital
LINK TO THE BOOK Click the image to enlarge A Social Ecology of Capital is a contribution to the critical analysis of capitalist growth and its environmental contradictions. What environmental historians have named the Great Acceleration, both of growth and ecological destruction, can be described, experienced and understood in a myriad of ways. My book draws on the metrics of global material flows to capture and illustrate this growth process.
‘The Future is Degrowth’ and ‘Degrowth & Strategy’: a Review in Dialogue
In the past, degrowth advocates have demonstrated why capitalism and economic growth are ill-equipped to solve socio-ecological crises and outlined what a degrowth future would look like. While it is now largely clear what degrowth is striving for, how to realize the transformation towards this end-state has not been engaged with satisfactorily.

Guy Standing’s ‘Plunder of the Commons’
Here are two nice bookends for understanding British politics over the past eight centuries: The Charter of the Forest at one end, which from 1215 (until 1971!) guaranteed commoners the right to access to their common wealth for subsistence. And at the other end, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who in 1981 ushered in a draconian regime of neoliberal capitalism that has eliminated those rights by stealing and privatizing common wealth.
Fighting for Justice
In 2017, Samuel Singer tracked the history of trans rights cases in Canada for a report commissioned by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. He found decades of cases involving trans people, spanning the breadth of Canadian jurisprudence, including in human rights law, family law, criminal law, immigration law, and more. This article draws in part from that research. Trans rights cases can be difficult to read.
Trans Rights Are Not Just Human Rights: Legal Strategies for Trans Justice
I. Trans Rights: Widening the Lens There has been great public and legal attention to the role of human rights in addressing trans marginalization.Footnote 1 This article widens the lens on trans rights by turning its attention to trans legal advocacy outside of human rights law. Third year of medical school is like learning to ride a bike
I could see the excitement on my six-year-old daughter’s face as we pulled into the parking lot and unloaded her new bike from the car. She had been anxiously awaiting this moment for several weeks — she was going to learn to ride a bicycle. She watched with increasing interest as I unscrewed the training wheels, tightened her handlebars and handed her the bike. She got on her new bike and with me holding onto the back of the seat and started to pedal. “Let go, Daddy,” I heard her say.
