How Bootstrapping Can Help Build a More Resilient Business
Ideas When Sari Adbo and co-founder Faisal Kanji launched hungerhub, a workplace meal delivery platform for companies, in 2018, they assumed that venture capital would be a key part of the startup’s growth story. But as the business began attracting customers, Adbo realized there was another way to build.
Why Canada needs to build its biomanufacturing capacity
The Building Biotech series explores how this country can become a global player in life sciences by streamlining the entrepreneurial path to commercialization. Canada has long been a source of world-class health and life sciences innovation. All too often, however, the economic benefits of these breakthroughs have been realized elsewhere, leaving Canada to miss out on the jobs, investment and long-term economic returns that come with a strong domestic biomanufacturing sector.
Two-dimensional in-plane transition metal boride, Mo 1.33 Y 0.67 B 2- x T z i - MBene for enhanced energy and power densities in supercapacitor devices
Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) MBenes are the emerging members of the advanced 2D materials owing to their exceptional functional properties for applications such as energy storage. We report the fabrication of Mo₄/₃Y₂/₃B₂−xTz (Tz = -O, -F, or -OH) i-MBene through the wet-chemical etching method using concentrated hydrofluoric (HF) acid.
Anatomy of a deal: How NxLite closed its oversubscribed Series A round
In a tight capital market, CEO David Mather strategically focused on reducing the risks that investors care about the most. Fundraising rarely follows a straight line. Even with a term sheet in hand, deals can quickly shift as investor priorities change. NxLite, a cleantech company that develops energy efficient window coatings, learned this firsthand during its Series A round. What looked like a straightforward process required months of deliberate work.
Building Biotech: How Canada can ensure early-stage innovators can access the resources they need
The Building Biotech series explores how this country can become a global player in life sciences by streamlining the entrepreneurial path to commercialization. When Providence Therapeutics began scaling its operations in Toronto, it quickly ran into a familiar obstacle: There was a dearth of affordable labs. Founded in 2015, the biotech venture was developing an mRNA platform designed to produce personalized cancer vaccines and other therapies.
Debt financing offers a different path for growth
Debt is no longer a stopgap for distressed startups. In today’s tighter funding environment, debt financing has become a deliberate tool to maintain momentum. For SWTCH, it helped bridge a critical gap as the quickly growing EV charging company closed its Series B round. Venture capital has long been the primary engine of startup growth. But as fundraising cycles become increasingly complex, founders are taking a more strategic view of their capital stack.
5 critical challenges that biotech startups face in Canada
For years, Canada’s biotech strategy was simple: Woo large multinational companies to provide an anchor for the sector. The idea was that these firms would create deep talent pools, generate commercialized IP in Canada and lead to the creation of new startups, provide valuable experience for founders and increase the amount of available capital. But that hasn’t materialized.
Analysis of Roll‐Coating Process for Nonisothermal Flow of Non‐Newtonian Fluid in the Presence of a Fixed Constraining Boundary: A Perturbative and Numerical Study
Roll coating (RC) is a fundamental process in both industrial and decorative applications, including the production of wallpapers, plastic and photographic films, adhesive tapes, magnetic recording media, and packaging materials. In this study, we develop a mathematical model for the flow of Powell–Eyring fluid confined within a narrow gap formed between a moving roll and a fixed substrate.
PyTorch‐Based Deep Neural Network Model for the Calendering Process of Non‐Newtonian Fluids With Temperature‐Dependent Viscosity
The objective of the present study is to develop a PyTorch-based deep neural network framework to predict velocity and temperature profiles in the calendering process of incompressible, non-Newtonian fluids with temperature-dependent viscosity. The governing partial differential equations are non-dimensionalized using appropriate variables and simplified using the lubrication approximation theory, which reduces them to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations.
Investment play: The benefits of being first
At BoxOne Ventures, cleantech investment lead Felicity Meyer is constantly scouring scientific literature, so that when the right opportunity comes along, she “can just strike.” Montreal’s startup ecosystem has been shaped in no small part by Arvind Ramanathan and Josh Felker, co-founders of Vigilant Global. Launched out of Ramanathan’s mom’s apartment in 2005, the trading firm grew to become one of the city’s most successful trading firms before it was acquired by DRW.
