The Case for QR Codes
is now part of CreativePro.com! This article appeared in Issue 55 of InDesign Magazine. One handy feature in InDesign is the ability to generate QR (quick response) codes within an InDesign document. QR codes are a special kind of barcode in the form of a square mosaic pattern—you’ve probably seen them increasingly appearing on posters, advertising, and packaging. But what made the InDesign team decide to add them to their software?

is now part of CreativePro.com! This article appeared in Issue 56 of InDesign Magazine. You might think you know everything about saving a document. You’ve done it thousands of times. But there are actually some special techniques that you may not know that can help you work more efficiently. . . . . This article is for members only.
Setting Word Import Options in InDesign
is now part of CreativePro.com! This article appeared in Issue 62 of InDesign Magazine. You may never have seen the Microsoft Word Import Options dialog box. It doesn’t open by default when you import Word files. So it’s entirely possible to place thousands of files without ever seeing it. That’s not to say you’ll never need to change its options. You may save yourself some time and grief, if you understand what the options mean. . . . . This article is for members only.
How to Delete an Undeletable Page Item in InDesign
is now part of CreativePro.com! This article appeared in Issue 74 of InDesign Magazine. Q. I inherited a document from a co-worker who was laid off abruptly. He must have known something was about to happen, because the opening page of the file he was working on has a nasty note in a text frame. I tried to delete the frame, but I couldn’t select it. I checked, and it wasn’t locked. I tried Command+Shift+click (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+click (Windows) and still couldn’t get rid of it.

Sandee Cohen February 10, 2019 The 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro laptops don’t have any function (F) keys. Instead there is a dynamic touch bar that changes according to the application and modifier keys chosen. Unfortunately, the default keyboard setup hides the function keys when InDesign is launched.
Use Split Window when Applying Colors to Text - InDesignSecrets.com
Thanks for coming to InDesignSecrets.com, the world's #1 resource for all things InDesign! Use Split Window when Applying Colors to Text David Blatner December 23, 2018 Applying colors to text can be really annoying in InDesign because when you select the text, it appears highlighted—and therefore all the colors are inverted. For example, here’s some text that is selected and colored magenta: Um, that is definitely not magenta! It looks green, right? Again, that’s because the color is inverted.

Building Presentations in InDesign - InDesignSecrets.com
I’ve been creating presentations using PowerPoint, Keynote and InDesign for longer than I care to remember. If you compare and contrast each app you’ll see that each one has its strong and weak points. Granted, PowerPoint and Keynote have all the bells, whistles and transitions you could possibly need, but if you want class, I believe InDesign is the application to use.

What I Learned at CreativePro Week About Publish Online - InDesignSecrets.com
Diane Burns June 26, 2018 One of my very favorite events is CreativePro Week, and this year’s conference, held in New Orleans from June 4–8, was one of the best ever. It was a week of so many educational and entertaining sessions, and gave us all an opportunity to meet and chat with other creative professionals, along with great food and good fun! Even as a presenter at this event, I always learn a lot.

Creating an Interactive Portfolio - InDesignSecrets.com
Back in the Jurassic Age of dinosaurs, photographers or designers (aka creative pros) carried large (some over 2 feet tall) portfolios that they lugged from one client or prospective employer to another. Some of these portfolios were hard-case boxes that held the creative pro’s work on mounting boards. Others used polypropylene sheet protectors inside a binder portfolio. Many companies required the creative pro to leave their portfolio for a week or so for the head honcho to look through.

InDesign CC 2018 Sneak Peek: Duden Hyphenation and Spell Checking for German from InDesignSecrets.com
For InDesign users who publish in the German language, a most welcome new feature in the upcoming InDesign CC 2018 will be native InDesign support for the Duden dictionary. Duden is a well-respected dictionary authority in Germany (similar to Webster’s in the U.S.) and allows for more accurate hyphenation and spell-checking of German words.
User Dictionaries from InDesignSecrets.com
If you only work with graphics in InDesign, you will never have any interaction with InDesign’s dictionaries. However, as soon as you add even a single character of text to your layout, InDesign’s dictionaries go to work behind the scenes controlling hyphenation, spelling, and even capitalization. Dictionaries are absolutely fundamental to the way text behaves in InDesign. So the more you understand how they work, the more benefit you can get from them.
Skip to the Leading, My Bonny Loose from InDesignSecrets.com
I cut my teeth on desktop publishing: QuarkXPress 1.0, PageMaker 1.0… anyone remember Ready, Set, Go? But I was baffled when I recently opened InDesign after several months of not touching it. While delighted with its new performance and new EPUB features (which have made it far simpler than even a year ago to produce a workflow for a single document to head to print on demand, PDF, and EPUB output), I had a problem. The captions below anchored-object figures were snapping to some unseen grid.
