Non-reciprocity in quantum technologies
Abstract Non-reciprocity—the ability to transmit signals in one direction while blocking them in the reverse—has become an important resource for quantum technologies, enabling directional amplification, routing of quantum information and topologically protected quantum states. Recent experimental advances have demonstrated non-reciprocal behaviour in low-loss, fully integrated devices operating with weak or no magnetic bias fields.
Hyperbolic wave attractors - Nature Physics
Abstract Wave behaviour in irregular cavities is typically dominated by chaos, whose diverging trajectories are highly sensitive to initial conditions due to complex internal reflections, and this limits control and stability.
Broadband Radiative Heat Transfer Suppression via Dispersion-Engineered Metasurfaces
Abstract Suppressing radiative heat transfer using metallic reflectors fails where electrical conduction or material incompatibility are prohibitive, whereas non-metallic alternatives that rely on conventional thermophotonic approaches face fundamental performance-bandwidth trade-offs, bounded by the Bode-Fano limit. Here, we redefine the strategy for broadband radiative suppression by leveraging complementary dispersion engineering in a dielectric metasurface pair.
3R-stacked transition metal dichalcogenide non-local metasurface for efficient second-harmonic generation - Nature Photonics
Abstract Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are van der Waals semiconductors that exhibit exceptionally high second-order nonlinear susceptibilities χ(2) = 100–1,000 pm V−1, but limited conversion efficiency \(\propto {[{\chi }^{(2)}]}^{2}{z}^{2} \approx 1{0}^{-10}\), due to their atomic thickness z.
Million-Q free space meta-optical resonator at near-visible wavelengths - Nature Communications
Abstract High-quality (Q)-factor optical resonators with extreme temporal coherence are of both technological and fundamental importance in optical metrology, continuous-wave lasing, and semiconductor quantum optics.
Spatio-temporal coupled mode theory for nonlocal metasurfaces - Light: Science & Applications
Abstract Diffractive nonlocal metasurfaces have recently opened a broad range of exciting developments in nanophotonics research and applications, leveraging spatially extended—yet locally patterned—resonant modes to control light with new degrees of freedom. While conventional grating responses are elegantly captured by temporal coupled mode theory, current approaches are not well equipped to capture the arbitrary spatial response observed in the nascent field of nonlocal metasurfaces.
Heat-assisted nonreciprocity - Nature Photonics
One-way light transmission can be realized by embracing, rather than mitigating, thermal effects in carefully engineered metasurfaces. Making light travel in one direction only is difficult owing to the principle of Lorentz reciprocity. Simply put, Lorentz reciprocity states that if light flows from left to right, it must also be able to flow from right to left. This makes it hard to protect lasers from back reflections.
Strong nonreciprocal acoustic extinction and asymmetric audibility from spinning fluid scatterers
Lorentz reciprocity places important constraints on the response of systems to wave excitations, and surpassing these constraints is of both fundamental and applied interest. In the context of scattering, reciprocity requires that the total extinction of an object is identical when excited from opposite directions, regardless of the asymmetry of the scatterer.

Super-resolution imaging of light-matter interactions near single semiconductor nanowires
We begin by computationally exploring the interaction of 648?nm wavelength emitters with a 75?nm diameter silicon nanowire, as shown in Fig. 1a–c. These interactions can be calculated using commercial software packages or, as in this case, solved analytically using a Green’s function approach29. For this size and wavelength, absorption in the nanowire is minimal and can be neglected (Supplementary Note 1), such that we only have to consider the scattering and excitation of waveguide modes.
Indirect to direct bandgap transition in methylammonium lead halide perovskite
Methylammonium lead iodide perovskites are considered direct bandgap semiconductors. Here we show that in fact they present a weakly indirect bandgap 60 meV below the direct bandgap transition. This is a consequence of spin–orbit coupling resulting in Rashba-splitting of the conduction band. The indirect nature of the bandgap explains the apparent contradiction of strong absorption and long charge carrier lifetime.
