Summer House | Sandra Lim
There was a full shelf of Simenon and a coral sculpture that looked a bit like barbed wire in the family room. I moved the flowered cushions off the bed and put the percolator with the bubbled glass knob out on the counter. There were candles to tint the feelings. You had to do what exactly to get yourself out of danger: arrange things, secure some heavy cream, good bread. It was so easy to be unhorsed and still easier to find that meaningful, eventually.
“The Great-Grandmothers”
One paid the rent with a row of her teeth. The other hacked off her Bible-black hair for a glass ring, then just as quickly shattered it in a fit of temper. She was always on the side of men. They both know so much about the world, being out of it now. One says, God can always see you with his unfeeling precision. A hiss under all speech. The other says that the sky is black, then blue, and always empty. Or as clear as a window, if you prefer. You can do anything you like.

Revelation, Sumud, and the Ethics of the Gaze in Suleiman’s It Must Be Heaven
In It Must Be Heaven (2019), Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman writes, directs, and stars as a version of himself, a character identified only by his initials, E.S., a reoccurring persona in all of his feature films. The film is structured as a circular journey from E.S.’s hometown of Nazareth to Paris and New York, and back again, as he seeks funding for a new film.
Cattiveria
Find and share the perfect poems. From an old Italian urn grew a red-orange flower like a banner, a lone, stray mood uninterested in progress. The air was damp and sweetish with tuberose and lemon. Meats and herbs seethed in oil and acid. Many nights of brittle hail and long, stiff whips of lightning rattled the wooden shutters. Days filled with oppressive heat that seemed to loop like a rope with a noose. Here is summertime. The world was another several thousand years older in an afternoon.

A BELL JAR There’s vanity in thinking that existential panic is very intelligent. But I want days off from my regular life— from selfhood, night thoughts. The sun, the moon. I refuse to express things for a little while, as a cloud holds a shower. There’s a room without a door. There are different ways to enter into one’s nature. Let the world have its own life, I’ll have mine. We can feel each other naming things over the vegetable universe.
Cinema of Reflexivity: Hegemonic Masculinity and the Logic of Terror in Haneke’s The White Ribbon
Das Weisse Band – Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte (The White Ribbon, A German Children’s Tale, Michael Haneke, 2009) is set in the fictional village of Eichenwald in pre-World War I Germany. The now elderly school teacher (Ernst Jacobi) narrates in a reflective yet uncertain tone, recounting the “strange events” in his village as a way to shed light on what later happened in his country (alluding to Nazi Germany).

GEP Prep Classes Are Still In Demand Despite Recent Changes
As an educator and a parent, I often find myself contemplating the changes to Singapore’s Gifted Education Programme (GEP) announced at the National Day Rally by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. While these updates emphasise holistic development, they bring a mix of relief and anxiety for parents like me. Many of us appreciate the shift towards nurturing the overall learning experience, but the pressures of competition remain a significant concern.
Unveiling the Meta Skin of Marzieh Meshkiny’s The Day I Became a Woman
Ruzi keh Zan Shodam (The Day I Became a Woman, Marzieh Meshkiny, 2000) is Marzieh Meshkiny’s debut film, produced by the Makhmalbaf Film House which was founded in 1996 by renowned Iranian film director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, also Meshkiny’s husband. The film is composed of three interconnected stories of women’s lives at different stages; each of which may be said to offer a subtle critique of traditional gender roles and expectations conveyed through each protagonist’s quest for personal agency.

The Stronger by Sandra Lim
With me, life becomes sweeter, so she loses some of the ability to defend herself. Yet even this gives her a forlorn sense of satisfaction. I know it by the distracted half-smile on her face. People believe love can do so much! As when they talk incessantly about the weather: they sound as if they're waiting for something incredible to come their way. Nestled against me, isn't she a moron of joy. She loves to tell stories because they're already finished by the start of the telling.
The Curious Thing: Poems
Price: $26.95 In stock The Curious Thing: Poems quantity Overview In this gorgeous third collection, Sandra Lim investigates desire, sexuality, and dream with sinewy intelligence and a startling freshness. Truthful, sensuous, and intellectually relentless, the poems in The Curious Thing are compelling meditations on love, art making, solitude, female fate, and both the mundane and serious principles of life.
Amor Fati by Sandra Lim
Inside every world there is another world trying to get out, and there is something in you that would like to discount this world. The stars could rise in darkness over heartbreaking coasts, and you would not know if you were ruining your life or beginning a real one. You could claim professional fondness for the world around you; the pictures would dissolve under the paint coming alive, and you would only feel a phantom skip of the heart, absorbed so in the colors.
Pastoral
When you called, I would come running, all my tags jingling. You’d grab a hank of my hair, and that would block out every thought. Our bodies swelled and stank in the heat, and we caved to it all day, under a cloud of flies. I dreamt of strung pheasants in old paintings, a horse of thick paste biting my arm. I dreamt of nothing. Sticky and hungry, we were like bad-tempered children who stay out too long in the rain. They feel lonely but have no language for it. You once gashed your head open.
After Touching You, I Think of Narcissus Drowning by Leila Chatti - Poems | Academy of American Poets
There will be no stars—the poem has had enough of them. I think we can agree we no longer believe there is anyone in any poem who is just now realizing they are dead, so let’s stop talking about it. The skies of this poem are teeming with winged things, and not a single innominate bird. You’re welcome. Here, no monarchs, no moths, no cicadas doing whatever they do in the trees.
Boston
When I first moved to this city to take a job, and the snows began to fall, a slow sadness took hold of me. Someone left a tiny pencil drawing of a sailboat on the ceiling of my bedroom, and I would stare up at it each night, thinking that it would eventually stir. I met someone that first spring, and I didn’t love him. But I very much wanted someone to look at me in all my youth and feminine momentum.
That Are
Then I became this stupid, trilling thing: what I desired was to become obscene. All the things I had loved up to then fell away in the long struggle between winter and spring. And then there was my body, inside of my soul. It had different aspirations. What form does it take without the soul? Helpless in a hideous new way, and as patient as a mountain. The soul is an innocent before it. So when I say stupid, I simply offer meaninglessness.
The Tribulations of the Working Class: Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio De Sica, 1948)
Ladri di biciclette (Bicycle Thieves, 1948) marked Vittorio De Sica’s eighth directorial credit in a prolific filmmaking career, which had included work produced within the dictates of Italy’s government-controlled cinema during the time of Benito Mussolini’s Fascist regime.
Jean Rhys by Sandra Lim
It’s now within an hour of sundown of a late November afternoon. It was a beautiful day, the cold burned down any indignation. What won’t degrade: the sick and distant, or near and black, bad-natured tides of want. Jean Rhys is saying If I could jump out of the window one bang and I’d be out of it. It isn’t done to admit to this kind of need, but spirit needs a house, and the brief pageant of being escorted through the grieving joy of words set down right. The cold bores her, oppresses her.
Sandra Lim: "San Francisco"
Sandra Lim My older neighbor on Rose Street once showed me the contents of his rent-controlled apartment, just up the stairs from mine. He was a hoarder, living in a state of tragic grandeur that his circumstances did not entirely support. Recurringly, his latest boyfriend would flee from him. When we met later in the alley to take out the trash, we would reliably turn into two lumps of fear. What was more terrifying than being abandoned?
"Bent Lyre" by Sandra Lim
I would bring out the coffee, bread and butter, salt, and a piece of fruit. The pigeons ran around in berserk patterns outside. Our warm, clandestine complicity had the force of a new actuality. Many mornings, we drank our coffee without any pleasantries. At the table, along an axis of real and imaginary numbers, you made your notes. I loved how true the imaginary numbers could be; it was much more interesting than life—you could have company and you could have loneliness in it.
A Walk Round the Park
Edward Taylor was a frontier minister who wrote a prolific amount of devotional poetry. The poems are full of deep piety, learned and quiet, but sometimes an errant wildness runs under the seams of his words. It’s said that he wrote poetic meditations to put himself in the correct spiritual state for his communion with Christ. I imagine the task swallowing him each time, moving its own patient way like snowmelt.
Envoi
Lazarus woke to the miracle of no longer fearing failure. He lifted his two sides from the ground as he tried To speak, one part gathering darkness, one part humming. When he walked out, he glimpsed a world never tried. At the crucial point, there is yet more than one way Of proceeding, but it seldom appears that way. Subscribe to the Guernica newsletter.

At the Other End of a Wire by Sandra Lim
When he called, there were 261 emotions at play. I thought there were only wistfulness, I see now the brilliance in the numbers. Emotions 75 and 78 made me happy just to know they existed. I felt less alone, more impervious. I was emboldened by the existence of 152. Though, how was I supposed to accept 9, 14, and 179? We deserved better, distress and indigence aside.

Don't Believe the Hype-We're Not Even Close to Full Employment
After Friday’s jobs announcement reported that unemployment is down to 5.6 percent, many in the media, including Jonathan Chait at New York Magazine and the Christian Science Monitor asked whether we could be getting close to full employment. On the contrary, full employment is still a distant vision. If that sounds like a radical and contrarian claim, you weren’t listening to what these same people saying about the economy seven years ago.
