"Down on the Farm" workshop offered to farmers & ranchers
2024-25 definitely had challenges for our producers, with low grain prices and the unpredictable weather along with disease and insect pressure. Farm stress is certainly on the rise for farm families in and across Kansas.
Post Rock Wheat Plot research
The annual Post Rock Extension District Wheat Demonstration Plot tour was held with the yield potential certainly optimistic. The tour had three wheat demonstration plots around the district with one of them being the KSU performance “replicated” trials that were planted four times in one location. We are fortunate to have special cooperators around the district that are willing to put in the extra time to provide local data for producers of North Central Kansas.

Kansas: Soil Fertility - Do You Need More Chloride?
Well winter is still here, even though we occasionally get a “tease” from spring that isn’t too far away! It soon will be time when you will be in field planting corn, soybeans and grain sorghum. So it isn’t too early to start thinking about your fertility program. Of course your first step with any cropping system is soil testing. This component is critical and is the cornerstone of your fertility program.
Kansas: Farm Leasing Arrangements - Have You Evaluated Yours for 2019?
Well, 2019 will soon be here, hopefully, everyone has their “to do” lists compiled and actually started. One of the items on your list may be re-examining your farmland leasing arrangements for your farmstead. Whether your leasing arrangements include cropland, pasture or both, this can be a very challenging component of your farming enterprise. It is estimated that more than 50% of Kansas farmland and pastureland is rented and is a growing prominence with many producers.
Kansas Wheat: Seeding Rates Important When Drilling
Producers are or soon will be planting their 2019 wheat crop, so stay tuned for some guidelines to remember when drilling your wheat. Variety selection is one of the most challenging decisions that needs to be made, but you need to remember that the wheat seeding rate is also a very important component to establishing your wheat crop. Recommendations in Kansas are often stated in terms of pounds or seeds per acre, and vary according to different precipitation zones.
Kansas Wheat: Evaluating Performance, Making Variety Selections for 2019
Clearly, the yield potential of a wheat variety is a top priority, but resistance to diseases and insect pests is also an important factor to consider when selecting a wheat variety. This year was definitely a challenge with the 2018 wheat crop, however, many producers are evaluating the performance of their wheat varieties and considering new varieties they should plant here soon.
Kansas Corn, Sorghum: Chinch Bugs Attacking Stands
Wheat harvest around the district is progressing with some producers done! The rains have really helped the continued development of the corn and sorghum which is significant for combating against insect infestations. All life stages of chinch bugs seem to be extremely active at the present time in both corn and grain sorghum. Nymphs and adults started migrating out of wheat fields at least two weeks ago, moving into any adjacent corn or grain sorghum fields.
Kansas Sorghum: Planting Guidelines
Producers are busy in the field planting corn and soybeans, however, it won’t be long and it will be time to plant grain sorghum. Well let’s hope that Mother Nature helps us out and keeps rain in our forecast! Our wheat continues to need moisture and our spring row crops need it to germinate and continue to develop. Some of the main planting practices affecting yields in sorghum are: row spacing, seeding depth, seeding rate/plant population, planting date, and hybrid maturity.
