What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job was in a local radio station in Guatemala. I did short reports and reports every 15 days.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Not for journalism, but I used it for a long time to learn to write.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means being able to bring people the information to empower them, to better understand their day to day. Encourage them to know more and better the society in which we live and reflect on it. It is serving others. In addition, personally it is growth, knowing a lot about various topics, traveling and meeting many more people. It is expanding our mind and doing it with an adventure.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Currently I collaborate with the news agency of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (Usac) in which I study. I began to collaborate as part of the Supervised Professional Exercise (EPS) and currently I continue to collaborate writing articles, reports, among others. The editorial line is focused on issues for young university students, without neglecting social and political issues, as well as the environment, social networks and technology.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I am working on a report on physical violence against women and I liked it a lot because in addition to learning about new tools, it has represented a new challenge for me. I had to get a lot of information which was difficult to access and I also had to work with databases with high volumes. In addition to developing mind maps and expanding my source base. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this has been a greater challenge. I now hope to also design a strategy to socialize information on social networks and create multimedia content, my next goals.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I have availability in the afternoons and nights.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I have not had any that I can call worse, rather I believe that there have been coverages with a higher level of complexity than others. An example is finding data when it is unavailable or restricted.
