This new requirement applies to every type of separation—resignations, terminations, retirements, and layoffs—regardless of whether the departing employee files for unemployment benefits.

From Adversity to Opportunity: Holy Cross Baseball Returns to Patriot League Playoffs
“One thing we always talk about in this program,” said Holy Cross head coach Ed Kahovec, “is when there’s adversity — we have to view it as opportunity.” Holy Cross has not been a stranger to young lineups in recent years, and this year was no different.
A year after stellar rookie campaign, Toomey is simply enjoying the process
Growing up around 30 miles down the road in Wellesley, Toomey always gravitated toward baseball — simply because it was the sport where he had the most fun. That’s the word that keeps coming up for Toomey: Fun. Toomey also dabbled in hockey and golf, but when the rink wasn’t always open, or when he hit the ball a little too aggressively at the links, baseball was always there, and it was reliable.
US Supreme Court Considers Application of Title VII to Employee Transfers
The U.S. Supreme Court recently considered when federal law bars discrimination in transferring, not firing, an employee. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employers from discriminating against any individual with respect to their “compensation, terms, conditions or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex or national origin.” See 42 U.S.C. Section 2000e-2(a)(1).
McMurtrie’s comeback from injury lifts Crusader offense
When Pat opted to play at Holy Cross, he considered the big picture — the well-roundedness of the education he would receive, the 90-Wide mentorship program and the elite football. And it’s safe to say that he’s capitalized on all of these. He’s been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll multiple times, and has started 27 games at right tackle. After a standout 2021 campaign, he was an All-Patriot League second team selection.
‘Phoenix has always been Phoenix’: Dickson provides spark for Holy Cross football
Growing up in a small community in Linden, Michigan, Phoenix loved football from the start. His father coached him during youth football, and from the very beginning, you could tell he was all in. He always knew every position — and excelled no matter where he went. “I could literally put him anywhere,” Mike said, “and he’d do the best job he could do. “He's a vacuum.
‘He’s been a fighter since day one’: Toughness, selflessness of Sean Morris leads Crusaders
Growing up as the youngest of three brothers, Sean Morris’ earliest experiences playing football came in the simplest form: In the front yard of their New Jersey home, playing pickup games with his brothers and neighbors. Sean’s oldest brother, Ryan, is seven years older, and middle brother Kyle is five years older — and Sean, despite the age gap, would always tag along and be included in the festivities with the older kids.
A fearless, physical Jordan Fuller is forging his own legacy for Holy Cross football
During his first year at Holy Cross in 2021, Jordan carved out a role as a reserve running back, primarily playing in goal-line situations and using his strength to his advantage. He finished with nine rushing touchdowns as a freshman, including a three-touchdown showing in a Patriot League Championship-clinching win over Fordham. While splitting time with three-time All-Patriot League running back Peter Oliver ‘23, Jordan still continued to elevate his game as a sophomore.
No matter the circumstances, Shipman finds joy in football, family
Byron was born into a family that emphasized the value of sports — “sports have been part of my family for generations,” he said. His mother is in the Athletics Hall of Fame at Campbell University after a stellar basketball career; at the time of her induction, she ranked sixth on Campbell's all-time rebounding list (837), seventh in steals (178) and ninth in scoring (1,243). She was a three-time All-Conference honoree and received All-America honors in 1988-89.
C.J. Hanson and family fueled by generosity, gratitude
The Hansons are a family brought together by ambition and providing unconditional support for the pursuit of their dreams. Hanson’s oldest brother, Tim, is an aeronautical engineer. His sister, Katie, is a zoologist. Johnson is currently a psychiatric technician with the state prison in Rhode Island, and hopes to return home and attend the New Jersey State Police Academy in a few months. “And I’m just a football player,” Hanson said with a laugh.
Spence provides spark for Holy Cross football with confidence, consistency
No matter the situation, Spence has routinely stepped up to help lift his team to victory. In the first game of Spence’s career, the Spring 2021 season opener at Lehigh, he came in right away and made the opening tackle on kickoff. In his first home game — a tilt against Fordham — he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. He later earned Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week honors, just two games into his first season as a Division I football player.
Granted another shot at history, Jacob Dobbs is ready to work
When all is said and done, Jacob Dobbs will go down in Crusader history as one of the most dynamic, talented, decorated, well-rounded, and universally respected and admired student-athletes ever to don a Holy Cross uniform. “He's the total package,” said Holy Cross linebackers coach Brian Vaganek.
‘EVERYONE CAN STEP UP TO THE PLATE’: Fifth-year seniors at the foundation of Holy Cross’ success
GRADY SMITH On the first play of Holy Cross’ Spring 2021 FCS playoff game at South Dakota State, Grady Smith broke his leg. It wasn’t the first obstacle of Smith’s career, but, on top of the immediate disappointment of not being able to play the near entirety of the postseason matchup, it proved even more difficult to navigate in the long run.
‘There's no game that he thinks he can't win’: Sluka delivers in high-pressure moments for No. 6 Holy Cross
For someone who has become recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in all of FCS, Sluka was unsure until very late as to whether he wanted to play football collegiately. He’d played football since age 7 and always played quarterback, and he always had the natural instinct and ability when it came to playing football. But at the same time, lacrosse took up a big part of his heart as well. Where Sluka grew up on Long Island, lacrosse was strongly emphasized and encouraged.
FOOTBALL & FAMILY: Chris Smith heads home to Buffalo
Three current Crusader student-athletes played under Jerry at St. Francis: junior offensive lineman Eric Schon, senior wide receiver Dominik Thomas and freshman cornerback Tommy Bestpitch. Bestpitch’s father, Tom, is a 2000 graduate of Holy Cross; numerous other Crusaders have arrived on The Hill via St. Francis. “Both of them are great minds of the game and both of them put so much hard work and preparation into game days,” Schon said, when comparing the two Coach Smiths.
‘Baseball became a therapy’
Meyer again came back strong post-injury, and began his junior season in 2020 on a tear, with seven doubles and two home runs in 15 games, until COVID-19 put an early end to the NCAA season. His senior year, impacted by a number of COVID-related restrictions and changes, got off to a slow start offensively — but things began to click in the second half.
