Cheap gift ideas for the holiday season
It’s the season of confusing Secret Santas and obligatory White Elephants. Navigating the etiquette of gift-giving can be frustrating; what do they like? What are they expecting? And, in some cases, who in the world is this person? On top of that, with every name you’re responsible for, you can feel your wallet shrinking and shrinking. But do not fear, the Emerald is here to offer a few strategic methods that’ll help you survive the gruesome gift-giving season.
How to spend time with your family over Thanksgiving break
Family is sacred. So when your aunts and uncles come storming through the front door, clearly it’s time to be thankful. An underlying current of obligation permeates through the drunken grandmothers, your uncle’s political ramblings and that odd hobby your cousin recently picked up. Whatever type of family you’re dealing with this holiday season, the Emerald is offering a few ways to cherish your time with them — or cope, depending on the situation.
Thanksgiving food 101
Thanksgiving can be stressful, sweet or a little bit of both. It can bring along close-minded relatives and moms who like to have a little too much wine; however, it can also provide time to make meaningful memories and discuss life’s blessings. Because family time comes with a whole host of feelings, the Emerald decided to offer its own food philosophies so that you can focus on what really matters.
Stuff to do tonight: Halloween 2018
In case you’re struggling to make plans and looking for something exciting to do, the Daily Emerald has compiled a short list of ideas to fill up your schedule. (Ryo / Creative Commons) Halloween night is the most spooky night of the year — a perfect excuse to gather all your friends and delight in all things eerie. Since the holiday falls on a Wednesday this year, making plans can be complicated.
Friday Night Magic: Players gather at local game shop
It was 6 p.m. The low hum of the room began to develop into animated chatter. Players trickled in and mingled with familiar faces before checking the event list for their seat assignment and settling in. Decks were laid out and adjusted for precision. One player in a green, zipped sweatshirt cracked his knuckles and rolled his head in a circle to loosen up. Another sat stoically with his hands flat on the tables.
Students help prepare UO for commencement on University Day
Students man a booth in front of the Collier House during University Day on May 17th (Adam Eberhardt/Daily Emerald). University Day is the longest standing tradition at the University of Oregon. On May 17, over 700 students, faculty and community members participated by offering an hour or more of their time to help beautify the UO campus in preparation for commencement ceremonies that will take place June 18.
In Tracktown USA, the race is just the icing on the cake
University of Oregon sports business instructor Josh Gordon hasn’t missed a single day of running in six years. That’s 2,216 consecutive days. Rain, shine, sleet or snow — Gordon averages 11.1 miles per day, and doesn’t let up. “I don’t even know how to drive around Eugene half the time, but I can get anywhere by running,” said Gordon. Over the weekend, 2,480 athletes competed in the Eugene Marathon races.
Running smart: Eugene marathoner doesn’t let multiple surgeries stop her
Shaluinn Fullove has been running competitively since she was five years old. After growing up in Los Angeles, she became an athlete at Stanford University, where she ran three cross country races during the 1996 NCAA Championships before graduating with an American studies degree in 2000 and landing a job at Google in 2002. Today, Fullove still works in human resources for Google in Palo Alto, California, where she lives with her husband and daughter.
"Don't Touch My Hair" exhibit stirs campus conversations about hair, race and identity

(Photograph courtesy of Ugochukwu Akabike) “Your hair is your glory,” Kristen Clayton’s mom told her over and over. She would hover above her daughter’s head and work her hands through the thick, waist-length curls. For Clayton, these moments were a sacred, ritualistic practice.
Celebrating Women: Here are three women making a significant impact in the UO community
Do you know a woman making a positive impact in the University of Oregon community? Chances are, you probably do — and chances are, she probably doesn’t get enough recognition. The Emerald asked the UO community to nominate outstanding women as part of Women’s History Month in March. Our newsroom chose one woman from a pool of nominees who are making a difference at UO with their integrity, courage, innovation, creativity, spirit, smarts, leadership, hard work and ambition.

Oscars round-up: The 90th annual Academy Awards’s best moments, tweets and style Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 90th annual Oscars on Sunday night, March 4. In his opening monologue, he offered guests a jet ski as a reward for the shortest speech, acknowledged the #metoo and #timesup movements and won over the audience with witty remarks about Harvey Weinstein. In case you missed the glamorous evening, the Emerald has you covered with the highlights of the event.
UO Women and Film provides a safe space for women to gather and further their education together
As women trickled into the fourth meeting of UO Women and Film, founder and President Danielle LeBlanc mingled with club members and made sure all the materials were prepped and ready to go. The room was buzzing as women introduced themselves to those they hadn’t met and embraced others they already knew. UO Women and Film is a student organization within University Film Organization (UFO) that aims to provide further education on the ins-and-outs of filmmaking.
Eugene-native Mat Kearney will be back in town to perform at McDonald Theatre on February 23
As a young kid, Eugene native Mat Kearney would ditch his seat in McArthur Court just as the final buzzer was about to sound. With the ball in the air on the last shot, the musician-to-be found himself sneaking past the University of Oregon security guards and preparing to charge the court after almost every game. Most spectators dreamed of an autograph from UO basketball players — maybe a jersey. But Kearney was only after one thing: Terrell Brandon’s sweaty wristband.
Emerald Recommends: 5 Rom-Coms to Binge on Valentines Day - Emerald Media
It’s here: February 14th has made its dreaded return. Couples are sprouting like flowers in the Spring, and girls everywhere are preparing to DTR (define the relationship) with their significant other—most of whom are blissfully unaware that they are about to be hit with this fateful discussion. All the singles out there, however, are simultaneously trying to escape the onslaught of all things pink, red and heart shaped.
How Sarah Jester and Taia Lucas celebrate women, Oprah style

She communicated hope, leadership and fearless pursuit toward a brighter tomorrow for women all over the globe.
Look a little deeper: Who are Ducks calling family this holiday season? - Emerald Media
Going home for the holidays encompasses a lot more than themed dishware and a meal around the table with relatives you barely know. In fact, the holiday season can give the term family a whole new meaning. With every passing year, the traditional nuclear family is becoming an ancient phenomenon, and the mixed, unconventional household is taking its seat as the new normal.
Look a little deeper: University of Oregon students talk about fear - Emerald Media
At some point in their life, people usually stop being scared of monsters under the bed and start to fear things like failure, sickness and isolation. College campuses are hotbeds for fear — students are working under pressure and are unsure of whether or not their effort will pay off post-graduation. It’s not just academics, either. Living independently and being in a new environment can also be scary.
Look a little deeper: students open up about what makes them feel alive - Emerald Media
At the same time that self-reflection can be liberating and encouraging, it can also be ugly and overwhelming. Peeling back the layers of our lives isn’t always glamorous, but it is often constructive and necessary and can open up space for growth. In a spirit of self-reflection, the Emerald took to the streets of Eugene to take a deeper look into how students perceive themselves and how they experience joy.
Review: In “Big Little Lies," kindergarten parents might be just as unruly as their kids - Emerald Media
In any elementary school, the over-involved, clingy parents are easy to spot. They’re signing up for the PTA, organizing a fundraiser of some sort, or notifying everyone of their child’s serious nut allergy. Pirriwee Public School is riddled with such parents; however, amid affluence, entitlement and tightly-held secrets, what was once typical schoolyard drama has turned into a devastating murder.
